This is as authentic as you get - main problem is you might not be able to get some of the ingredients or fresh spices mentioned in the book.Malaysian Cuisine is normally spicy (close enough to Indonesian) but you can always cook without the spicy part and still maintain its local flavor.Go for the Satay (Malaysian barbeque at its best) - think of it as a Kebab with dipping Peanut sauce but instead of chunk of meats - the meats are thinly sliced on a bamboo skewer - which you can get at most grocery stores.

This is an absolutely beautiful cookbook on Malaysian cooking. The pictures are outstanding and certainly make you want to try the recipes. Not only is it well illustrated, but it also has clear directions. Some of the ingredients are difficult to find in the U.S., but substitutions are given.

after a recent visit to singapore where i sampled delicious food, i was eager to try the recipes myself. i knew amazon would be the perfect place to find a cookery book, so after searching through a selection of books i chose this one. i wasn't disappointed. as well as recipes, the author gave detailed explanations about origins and culture adsociated with malaysian cookery. the recipes are easy to follow, even if it is difficult to find some of the ingredients where i live. i recommend this book to anyone interested in good food.

Looking for a recipe for Roti Canai (Flaky Fried Indian Bread) which I recently tried and loved at a local restaurant, I was thrilled to find it in the cookbook by the chefs of Bon Ton Restaurant and Jonkers Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur and Malacca respectively.The Index of Recipes in ARFM reads like Who's Who in Malaysian cuisine. You can find recipes for satay, noodles, sauces, wontons, spring rolls, pancakes as well as all things spicy.The photography is awesome as are the other books with the "Authentic Recipes from..." title, such as the one featuring Indonesia cuisine.

Have made numerous recipes in here that were all crazy delicious. But the most fun was an egg bread called roti Jala that you dip in peanut satay sauce. And the bread looks like you're eating your grandmothers doilies. Too fun to make and more fun to eat.

If you like periplus cookbooks and already own "the food of" version of this book, then reconsider buying this one. The new "authentic recipes from" series is just a rehash of the "food of series" with a few subtle changes such as relacing obscure recipes with more recognisable ones, bigger font and format, less on the history and some updated pictures.Overall I kind of like the recipes in the new books more as there is less filler and odd recipes, but I do like the layout and format of the older hardcover "food of" books. So if you own "the food of" and want to get this book, be prepared to sell it off as you will only end up doubling up 90% of recipes between the 2.

Brunch is my favorite meal so I'm always looking for new ideas or twists for old tried and true recipes. This has a variety of recipes that I want to try from brunch cocktails to salads. So far, I have made the potato pancakes and they were delicious. I've been making potato pancakes with an old family recipe for years. This one called for more baking powder and more onion than I usually use. The steps were very clear but I think there was a mistake in the order written because it says to drain the potatoes after processing with the eggs and onion. That's like draining pancake batter, so I didn't follow the recipe steps exactly as written. I drained the potatoes after shredding and then processed them with the other ingredients. I wouldn't have known to do that if it was my first time making them, but maybe it would work as written. I also doubled the recipe, but added the same amount of salt called for originally. They would have been way too salty if I followed the recipe as written, which called for 2 tsp. of salt and 2 cups of onion for for 3 lg potatoes! Must be really large potatoes! The recipe would have been better written with cups or weight measurements for the potatoes.

This book has a few recipes that might be good for those are new to cooking, but overall nothing new or interesting.It is fun to take a traditional recipe and add a twist to it, or a bit of flair, but the original recipe cannot just be ignored. For example, a croque monster sandwich has bechamel sauce. Changing this sandwich to French toast makes it NOT a croque monsieur; still nice, but not the same thing. This book does this a few times.

This book is loaded with basic brunch recipes and many special recipes to make any brunch a success. I highly recommend it to those getting ready to host their first brunch.

Recipes remind me of my childhood. Most are not difficult and the variety is wonderful. The book is written in a straightforward and easily understood way. This is now my favorite cookbook

I like the different touches in old favorite breakfast dishes! Can’t wait to try some of the dishes in the book!

The author has such an astute power of observing small details, how people walk, dress, the many foods she and her husband are offered, that I felt I took the journey with her. And it was not like a travel article, in which writers try to describe places in such a way to inspire the reader to visit the described locale. Here was an absence of the beauty of nature that causes wonderment, rather the entire overview of a forgotten small town in Siberia near the border to China. And its climate over the span of two years. Cold, and hot. Windows that do not open, no screens to keep out the summer's mosquitoes, I was content reading it in comfort and admiring this couple and how they endured the two years, which some Peace Corps members much younger than Dirlam gave up on after one year.There were many get-togethers with the neighbors, the teachers, and vodka flowed. The food was rather monotonous, and deserts often chocolate bars and sliced apples, healthy food and then vodka again. Mainly consumed by the Russians, not by the author. She and her husband endured the full two years they had signed on for in a place far from the comforts of home without complaints and adjusted to the pace in this "lost" place in the world. One thing Sharon found and treasured in their two years in outer Siberia, was the friendship and helpfulness of the Russians among whom they lived, their honesty and often sweetness of character. One did indeed lexperience the humaneness of Russians and Americans when living together in a village situation, and that there were no borders to comradeship and that deep friendships could form quickly in a land without borders.

It is too easy to forget the way things were, and it is good to be reminded: to realize how much things have changed and how far Russia has come from those early days of transition - But also how much some things (like relationships and values) remain the same. BEYOND SIBERIA is a very readable book about life in one of the least well known parts of Russia--Birobidzhan, the capital of the Jewish Autonomous Region in Russia's Far East. Dirlam and her husband worked for two years as Peace Corps volunteers in that remote region, from 1996 to 1998. Written from the notes that the author kept in her journal during that time, this book chronicles her life, work, and travels in an area of Russia seldom visited by people from the West.Many of the stories focus on her experiences as a teacher at the Birobidzhan Pedagogical Institute--including classroom conditions, friendships (and conflicts) with her Russian students and Russian colleagues, and interactions with other Peace Corps volunteers. Dirlam provides numerous insightful observations about human relationships in the workplace, as well as among her own personal friends and acquaintances in the Russian Far East. I especially appreciated her honesty in describing both the joys and sorrows, the successes and failures, of working under often difficult conditions in a part of the world that she calls "a forgotten place."A professional writer before going to Russia, Dirlam does a good job of describing the difficulties of daily life in eastern Russia. I liked her no-nonsense approach to the challenges that she and her husband encountered every day--from shopping and cooking to doing the laundry and buying a train ticket. And I'm sure that readers will enjoy her stories about the Russians whom she befriended during her two years in Birobidzhan. Having lived in the Russian Far East myself, I can attest to the authenticity of her observations and the accuracy of the many situations that she writes about.BEYOND SIBERIA is a book that will be of particular interest to the hundreds of Peace Corps volunteers who have served in Russia themselves. I also recommend it to anyone with an interest in Russia--and to armchair travellers who would like to learn more about life in this remote "forgotten place." A very good read!

'Beyond Siberia'', Sharon Dirlam's account of her two-year sojourn as a Peace Corps teacher brings an unfamiliar part of Russia to life. I found the structure and writing most engaging! While offering a chronological account of hers and her husband's experiences in Birobidjan, Dirlam includes many fascinating details about the life and culture they encountered. 'Zhag za Zhagem' ['step by step', page 54 and later], we see the philosophical and often humorous responses of their Russian friends to the difficult conditions of their daily lives. Dirlam's experience as a travel writer comes through in her vivid observations and pithy reflections.This book offers a wonderful and varied cast of characters, succinctly telling anecdotes, valuable insights, and some interesting (and not always obvious) contrasts between Russian ways and those of the US. A particularly telling sequence in this regard is the story of Dirlam's return home midway through her tenure in Birobidjan--on Fourth of July.When I finished this book, I felt like I'd been given a privileged angle of vision on an intriguing part of the world and its inhabitants, the Russian 'Jewish Autonomous Region' as it was once called. Highly recommended to teachers, Peace Corps volunteers, armchair travellers, and anyone with a curiosity about a little-known part of Russia.

This book is for every young person touched by the loss of a friend in their prime. It's rich in visual content and surpassed in written word. When you're represented, the validation feeds your soul. It's like a life fertilizer in a paperback book-thank you trees. I think the pivotal moment of seeing life before and after you die, will humble and change the perspective of every type of audience reading this graphic novel. I don't want to give away the story line...but the prolific history of black and brown leaders connecting to 21st century youngsters is priceless. There's poetry, history, artistry, authenticity and empowerment in this engaging read. I challenge a grandparent to read this with their grandchild. Connect the generations. Our elderly are living ancestors that connect the past with the future. What I loved most about this book is that ancestors have an influential role in reality and in the spiritual world...they speak to the living. This graphic novel is a window into history and a reflection of now-like roots regenerated!

At the end of a long day of visits, lunch conversations, and a lecture presentation, I was thanking John Jennings and Damian Duffy for being so awesome discussing their recently released graphic novel adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s KINDRED. I congratulated them again on their week old release of I AM ALFONSO JONES. We had talked about all the new YA books that were being published and how many held the same theme. And right before departing, John said it was unfortunate that the big selling topic is the killing of little Black boys . . .The constant shootings and beatings of Black people across the United States has caused a state of numbness in people that are watching or reading the news. We are living in a culture where the old saying, “Who you gonna believe me or your lying eyes?” holds true every time a not guilty verdict is announced even though videos show police officers beating, strangling, or even shooting a Black person over and over and over again. The eyes are misinterpreted in every courtroom across the country when officers are put on trial for these deaths.I AM ALFONSO JONES is a hip-hop blues production beautifully choreographed by Tony Medina, John Jennings, Stacey Robinson and Damian Duffy. This graphic novel rhythmically moves through the life and hereafter of fifteen year old, Alfonso Jones of Harlem. This is a living testimony of the many wandering Black souls that have been killed by police violence without any justice and definitely no peace. From Eleanor Bumpurs to a Black homeless veteran, these spirits ride throughout New York on a different underground railway, one where they are invisible, forgotten, and sadly not freed because of juries denying their innocence.I AM ALFONSO JONES begins with a soaring bullet aimed at a fifteen year old who was just holding a clothes hanger and a lifetime of hopes and dreams. The graphics precisely detail how the artists’ danced perfectly with Medina’s words throughout the story. They literally were all on the same page / panel to make sure the reader does not miss one drop of the pain, shock, anger, and betrayal that is seen through classmates, parents, and community. This book is spiritual, historical, and poignant. It is timely and should be read by EVERYONE. The Black Lives Matter Movement is real. The featured bullet has been real too many times. The painful message within I AM ALFONSO JONES is sadly real. And unfortunately the non-existing ending is also real. I AM Alfonso Jones.

I was fortunate enough to see I Am Alfonso Jones illustrators John Jennings and Stacey Robinson speak on a panel at SXSWEDU. The panel was about the ways that art can help confront inequality by shining a harsh light on it and creating a narrative that resonates with audiences. They spoke about their work on I Am Alfonso Jones, and I picked the book up immediately because I appreciated their philosophy so deeply.What a heartbreaking and beautiful work. I am especially partial to the illustrations, but of course the visual aspect and the narrative aspect of a graphic novel are inextricably tied. The story takes on a fascinating and innovative side of the matter, adopting a perspective that only a work of fiction could help the reader consider and explore. Although this one is clearly designed to introduce younger readers to the realities and dangers of growing up as a person of culture in a system that refuses to reckon with its bigotry and bias, its weight works for older readers, as well. This is an important book. If you're a fan of Angie Thomas' The Hate U Give, you will appreciate the new angles that I Am Alfonso Jones offers.

I Am Alfonso Jones is a critical addition for all young adult classroom libraries! Alfonso Jones is a character that students are able to relate to, and develop a relationship with even after his death. The graphic novel format of this story, is crucial in that it gives an entirely new group of readers access to an important social justice topic. The visualization enables readers to understand and process Alfonso's story differently than if they were just reading words. The multiple perspectives illustrated throughout this story enables to readers to be thoughtful warriors for a positive change in their futures!

I'll admit that graphic novels are not my favorite story telling media but this really used it well. It's beautifully drawn. The threads of Hamlet throughout were genius.This isn't a book with a happy ending. There is no justice for Alfonso in the end, just pain and heartache and a world that continues on. It left me yearning for justice.

Great graphic novel that introduces the Black Lives Matter through the wrongful death of a black adolescent. Labeled YA through my library, I found it very informative and put it in my fifth grade library. Hasn’t stayed on the shelf more than one class.

This is a great achievement in youth literature, and equally resonant for adults. And the drawings are as excellent as the story. Destined to be a classic.

I ordered this particular book for the sole purpose of incorporating it into my classroom library. Just finished it and must say it is well crafted, completely relevant and amazing. I will definitely recommend this to others.

Wonderfully written. In many ways this book is about how we need to live in our rapidly changing world. It is how we need to engaged in creative processes and less focused on consuming things. In many ways it is about the magic of our existence, but very connected to reality, which continues to evolve. It is a book that everyone should read whether they work in the Arts, the Social Sciences, or Crafts.

From the Act of Creation, by Arthur Koestler to Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Suzuki Roshi, to Kyna Leski it all comes down to the space between heaven and earth where the storm arises. The excitement and the terror of that place is all that we have to be truly alive. Imagine what life would be without "the storm of creativity."

This book is truly a treasure and a presents a beautifully intuitive metaphor about creativity and cultivating a creative practice. I read it about a year ago and now I am revisiting it by listening to the audiobook version because it is such a wonderful book!

This is a fascinating book: She shares the way she sees the world so well.

Enjoying this read. Some ideas have been stated/framed differently in other books on creativity, but Leski writes in a casual/poetic way that makes complex ideas accessible. Not so much a "how-to", but a framework that allows perspective on one's own creative practice. Would be a good book for students to read.

Kyna Leski is one of the most important and influential architecture teachers in the US. This book is a supremely well organized distillation of many years' experience teaching architecture and other design fields at undergraduate and graduate level. For teachers of architecture this is an essential book--hopefully it will spark a serious discussion about pedagogy in our field. In my opinion her book also has great value for thoughtful people working in other fields--politicians, businesspeople, composers--for anyone who must come up with a singular response to situations/problems that don't have a clear definition or solution. It is risky to write about creativity. Methods, rules, or techniques for being creative obviously won't work since each creative task and answer is unique. Accounts of the creative process-- stories of how others have framed and resolved problems-- can also also be of limited use since the firsthand experience often seems continuous or instantaneous, and usually lies below the threshold of conscious attention. Kyna Leski brings a deeply reflective mind to this elusive phenomenon--she slows down the process, and in my opinion accurately accounts for what is going on. She shows us that the creative process is not continuous or seamless. There are junctures, phase changes. At different points in the trajectory, different rules apply: there's a moment to think analytically and another moment to intentionally transgress what one has already done and thought. She is able to point to these discontinuities and offer helpful suggestions. Her guiding hand is strong but also light: "Why don't you try this?"Some readers who consider themselves experts in their chosen terrain, working and teaching in creative fields, will no doubt be provoked by this book. To give one example: by my understanding Leski advocates diagrammatic thinking at a late point in the creative process. Those who are committed to diagrams as initiating seeds for thought will disagree with this--and so will others who see no beneficial place in the creative process for diagrams. I think that this book will become a fundamental reference for discussions and debates on creativity.

To what does the title of this book refer? Kyna Leski suggests that a storm is an appropriate metaphor for the creative process. How so? Both seem to begin from what appears to be nothing; arise out of a disturbance to displace and destabilize the status quo; increase power and impact while varying in nature and extent; both are contagious; in perpetual motion; and have reiteratIve cycles. Neither can they be controlled, nor can a specific course for either be predicted.She goes on to observe, "The consequences of a storm and creativity are real, and specific. They are found in the exchange that happens between the world, creator, and those with whom the creation interacts. This may be the viewer or a work of art, the recipient of an idea, patient receiving the novel treatment, dweller in the built house, user of an artifact, and so on. Creativity continues; an artifact formed through creative practice is not an end point but rather a point along a never-ending way."She cites my favorite passage in T.S. Eliot's "Four Quartets" in Chapter 2 ("Little Gidding") and once again as this book concludes:"We shall not cease from explorationAnd the end of all of our exploringWill be to arrive at where we startedAnd know the place for the first time."Each storm of creativity offers the opportunity to see at least some portion of reality -- what is or what could be -- that we had not recognized before. As Alvin Toffler urges us to do, we must learn, unlearn, and relearn from each storm throughout a process of discovery that never ends until we do. This is probably what Pablo Picasso had in mind when observing that he spent all of his adult life struggling to see the world as he once did as a child. His quest ended only when he died...at age 91.

I had two primary issues with the book. First, the books is written by a software guy for software guys and start-ups. I can only recall one reference in all the pages to a hardware product. So this books in not for anyone that is looking to create physical and tangible products. In fact, hardware is hard and my research hasn't found anything remotely useful in applying lean start-up principles to hardware.Second, the focus of the book is on "what" a lean start-up is and doesn't provide actionable information. Diarrhea of the word processor resulted in a 365 page definition of a lean start-up, where it could have been boiled down to less than 100 pages (minus 1-star for waste...Distill it down to an A3 using Lean Thinking). So let me save you some time.1. An entrepreneur is a person who creates a business around a product or service under conditions of "extreme uncertainty", and should ascend the vision-strategy-product pyramid. (Google: Start with Why TEDx - Ries redefines that concept)2. A start-up is a phase of the entrepreneur's organization, tasked with the goal of reducing the condition of "extreme uncertainty", and finding a sustainable business model (Google: Lean Business Model Canvas).3. Use customer discovery (class) and validated learning (method) to find a sustainable business model around your product or service idea. The validated learning method of Build-Measure-Learn is synonymous with Plan-Do (Build), Check (Measure), and Act (Learn) cycle, which as most people know is derived from the scientific method. a. Build a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) b. Measure using Actionable Metrics instead of Vanity Metrics. c. Learn from your MVP and Actionable metrics and Pivot to improve problem/solution and product/market fit or Persevere.4. Finally, use lean principles (i.e. small batch sizes, 5 whys root cause analysis, chief engineer, blah, blah, blah) to stream-line your operation once you've found a viable business model and are ready to leave the start-up phase and enter the growth phase. Assuming you are reading the other product reviews, I'll try not to duplicate what I've noticed other reviewers are writing about The Lean Startup by Eric Ries.I will say this though:o Eric tells a lot of stories to make his points, and focuses as much on convincing us to buy into the Lean Startup principles as he does teaching them. I like the stories though, and I bet I would really like this guy if I were to meet him.o Eric sometimes gushes a bit about startups which are so young that I wonder if it is too early to call them a success. For example, Ries spends over 3 pages talking about Obama and Dodd-Frank, and praises the fledgling (at that time) Consumer Federal Protection Bureau for CONSIDERING his suggestion of starting their agency (with its $500 million budget) like it is a lean startup.Again, these are 3 pages talking about how the CFPB *could* use lean startup methodologies, not about how they have actually used them.Given the extremely limited usefulness of anecdotes such as these, you can't help but wonder if Eric in those moments more focused on trying to put people's names in a book than he is at giving readers something solid to benefit from.At any rate, it's still a great book and definitely worth the money.That said, if you want more of the HOW TOs of Lean Startup, I'm currently reading both Steve Blank's The Startup Owners Manual and Ash Maurya's Running Lean, and while I'm not finished with either of them yet, I can definitely tell you they take Eric's teachings to the next level -- and then some.

I bought into the hype of this so called "bible" of entrepreneurship after being force fed with it in innovation and entrepreneurship classes at university. It is ranked as the quintessential entrepreneurship book/movement of our time, but let me warn you, it's not. Don't fall into this half baked, candy coated approach to 'successful' business creation.This book could've easily been a 2 page essay but instead it is a 300 page college-esque (and very boring) essay. It also feels like an ad for Eric Ries' unheard-of internet businesses. There is nothing Lean about the Lean Startup, it should be called the Learn Startup instead. The Lean Startup approach to business creation kills disruption and true innovation, it is a guide for building a catered (incrementally improved at best) business. If Henry Ford followed this we would indeed have faster horses. Read Thiel's From Zero to One instead. This is garbage.

The author represents the MBA approach to Bay Area startups. With a Yale BA and a Harvard MBA he has been the object of a lot of press coverage on his theory of lean startups and how it can be applied in more traditional business settings. He advice is to not waste years trying to make a business work. Kill it and move on. He goes into detail on how he did not follow this advice, wasting thousands of hours producing a product that was not well received because the market research did not ask the right questions and the product's users were not asked what they wanted. Being stubborn, the author and his partners kept at it until they stumbled onto the right answers after several tries. I guess the author is saying he has learned his lesson now. His latest startup is a people's stock exchange not beholden to short term gains.
