She can't believe she is able to get the car to stop before the bridge as it would have meant certain death if she hadn't. Then when someone knocks on her window to see if she's ok, the last person she expected to see when she looked up was her former high school crush Jacob. River just has to keep things together so she can get back to her job as an investigative reporter in Dallas. Jacob has just pulled into Rivers father's drive and she's about to get out when she gets a call from one of her friends Lydia and she needs her help. Jacob takes her there right away. It would seem that Lydia's younger half sister is missing-which is not like her at all! Warning bells go off for River as all of the thing's surrounding Leda's disappearance are so familiar to the cases of the "Smiling Killer's" that River has been trying to solve. When Leda is found the next day murdered she has all of the same characteristics as the other victims unfortunately. Again, this jerk has hit close to home. Want to know why I say "again"? Want to know what else happens to not only River and Jacob but also her father and some of her other friends? Only one way to find out read this prequel you will not be disappointed and you will want to know what happens to each of the "Danger Girls" as they called themselves in high school and how they have survived and thrived over the years.

River Montenegro returns to Los Rios to help her father, but the crimes she’s investigating as a reporter follow her. The fact that her first love is determined to help just adds to the tension, since she and Jacob have too much baggage.This wasn’t my favorite Rios Azules book to start with. The similes were awkward, and River seemed too wrapped up in herself. Details like River and Jacob dousing themselves with one bottle of water from the cup holder before they went into a burning building made me scratch my head. Then, it ended with a cliffhanger. The description said this had been removed, but mine still had it, and there was no update. I expected better from this author and was very disappointed.

This is the first book I have read by this author but it won't be my last. I was pulled into the live of the characters and the story line from the first pages, and the twists and turns in the story kept me reading until the final pages. I enjoyed the dynamics of the Danger Girls and definitely look forward to reading more about them. I was given a copy of this novella in return for an honest review, and this is one that I definitely recommend to any one who enjoys good Christian romantic suspense.

What a terrific Christian suspense/romance. It is a real edge of your seat, nail biting suspense. The novella is very well written and has a great cast of characters. A word of Warning have Color of Danger handy because you will want to dive right into it. River of Danger is a real cliffhanger. My first book by this author, but definitely not the last.

I love Prequel stories and River of Danger by Alexa Verde is a keeper! Alexa has an amazing ability to bring her characters to life in a way that sweeps the reader into the story and never lets go. I loved returning to the Rios Azules community to revisit familiar faces and meet new people. Alexa's Christian Suspense stories are awesome and I promise her Rios Azules series will not disappoint.

I am looking forward to reading more stories about all the adventures of this family.I'm hoping for a follow up on this family that have been introduced in this series!

I just loved this prequel to the Danger series and cannot wait for the next one! I am so glad to have found this author!!

I did really enjoy the first book. I purchased the Danger series, not realizing there was a first book. This book pulled together missing pieces for the second book. The book was interesting from the start and grabbed my attention. Love the resistant romance edge to the series!

A must read after Dick Cheney's , In my time. Frank and candid. Interesting perspective from a daughter and a campaign staffer.

It seems that if one were to grow up in a family of wealth and power that they would have a positive outlook on life. Not so with Ms. Cheney. She spends almost the entire book telling about how mean people were to her on the campaign trail and whines constantly about the toils of politics.In addition, she missed a great opportunity to tell about the issues that confront an individual growing up gay in a conservative family. This along with the fact that the book must have been written by an 8th grader points to a poor read.I would give it zero stars if possible.

She is obvisous pulling punches and being edited. But it is still an interesting read as she attempts to explain her actions or lack there of.

I'm the mother of a lesbian daughter, and an activist who works for equal rights. During the last presidential election, I wondered how Mary Cheney was able to reconcile her sexual orientation and her loving commitment to her partner with a leading role in the reelection campaign of a political party that would write second class status into the U.S. Constitution for Mary, her partner Heather, and all other lesbian and gay citizens.The title, Now It's My Turn, implies some self-revelation of thoughts and emotions held back during the campaign for fear of jeopardizing her father's re-election. Instead (as other reader reviewers noted) the book's content is reflected accurately only by the subtitle: "a daughter's chronicle of political life." This day-by-day account of the vicissitudes of life on the campaign trail is competently, occasionally humorously, written, but not what I expected.For me, in fact, the book raises more questions than it answers. It's obvious that Mary Cheney is devoted to her father -- her depiction of him comes across as near idolatry. But were there NEVER any strains in their household? According to her, she came out to her parents while a junior in high school. Her father immediately told her he loved her and just wanted her to be happy. Her mother worried about the difficulties she would face in her life ahead, but came to understand that as a "secondary issue," once Mary "explained that my life would actually be much harder if I had to lie about who I was."From that point on, she describes both parents as totally supportive. Yet, from news sources other than Mary's memoir, it seems obvious that this support was at times strained in the Cheney family. Take Lynne Cheney's angry response, during the 2000 campaign, to an interview question about her daughter's lesbianism by ABC's Cokie Roberts. "She has declared no such thing," Lynne Cheney snapped. That hardly spells total support to me.From volunteering for a number of years in a support group run by Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), I know that few parents indeed take an announcement by their child that they are gay or lesbian with complete equanimity. Even mothers and fathers like myself, who identify as "liberals," take one step forward and one step back toward complete acceptance. Doubtless, the Cheneys' journey to "total support" was not instantaneous. Describing more of their struggle would have been helpful to parents undergoing own "journey."But Mary Cheney herself seems to take a step forward, a step back. Again from other news sources, I know that before taking a paid position with the Republican campaign, she worked in public relations for the Coors Brewing Company, doing outreach as a "liaison" to the gay and lesbian community. This is hardly a closeted position, and, indeed, she writes in Now It's My Turn that her sexual orientation was never a secret.Yet, she declines to identify herself as a lesbian, preferring the more "politically neutral term," gay. And she seems angrier at Edward's and Kerry's mention of her orientation during the debates than by President Bush's support for the Federal Marriage Amendment, even though the amendment would not only bar same-sex marriage, but would also prevent both Federal and state governments from enacting any sort of domestic partnership or civil union law that would give unmarried couples any of the rights or responsibilities of marriage.It's not till page 173 that she even mentions the Federal Marriage Amendment, and then addresses the problems it caused her in the most cursory terms. She decided (after seeing an advance copy of the speech) not to attend the 2004 State of the Union address where Bush voiced his support for the amendment, but made up her mind to stay on as director of vice-presidential operations for Bush-Cheney '04 because she had made a commitment. And, more importantly, because of her strong belief in her father.Another reader reviewer, who describes herself as a lesbian from Colorado, commented that despite her (the reviewer's) support for equal rights, she was a Republican supporter because she believed that crushing terrorists was the most important issue, and that she saw this as Mary Cheney's position as well as her own. But though that may help explain Cheney's decision to stay part of the Republican campaign, it doesn't tell me why she was so upset by being called a lesbian during the political debates.In fact, upset is a mild word. Mary Cheney describes herself as infuriated by both John Edward's and John Kerry's mention of her orientation during the vice-presidential and presidential debates, respectively. I didn't remember Edward's words that well, but Cheney's report of him saying, "I think the vice president and his wife love their daughter....very much," hardly seems a grievous insult, nor does his praise of them for embracing her. I do remember Cheney immediately thanking Edwards for his "kind words" about his family. But I never would have guessed, till reading it in his daughter's book, that Dick Cheney meant this as a kind of double-talk. That is, the Cheney family saw Edward's praise as a political ploy "that would remind everyone in the known universe, particularly those who might object, that I was gay." Cheney's thanks were intended solely to shut off any further discussion of this topic.I do remember Kerry's statement in the presidential debate very well. In response to the question, "Do you believe homosexuality is a choice?" Kerry said, "I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was, she's being who she was born as."I remember this so well because, as the mother of a lesbian daughter, I felt Kerry's answer was both good and sensitive. Perhaps he was "targeting" Mary Cheney -- as she claims -- and looking for any excuse to mention her orientation. It didn't come across that way to me. To me, Kerry was saying that lesbians and gays are ordinary people who are members of families, including families who are prominent members of the administration. By singling her out for mention, he was making the point that she had grown up in a loving, stable family, with mainstream values, and that nothing in her parents' way of life or child-rearing practices caused one of their two children to grow up gay.It seemed to me, further, that he was making the point that gay and lesbian people are not some strange species, but our children, or our siblings or our aunts and uncles. They are born with the inclination to find a loving relationship with someone of their own sex, just as some children are born with the inclination to use their left rather than right hands. It hardly seemed "a cheap and tawdry political trick," as Mary Cheney quotes her mother's response.I once read an article on writing that said many writers write to find out what they think, rather than to express their already formed thoughts. So it is with this review. I had expected to simply reiterate my opening thoughts that the book revealed little about the private Mary Cheney. But I find myself reaching a different conclusion. I think she does reveal herself. Despite being out in her previous employment and her spousal relationship, Mary Cheney's views in Now It's My Turn seem to bear a close resemblance to don't-ask-don't-tell. It's all right to be out as long as no one mentions it too loudly, or broadcasts that information. Her inner mindset seems driven more by political expediency than by self-acceptance or pride.It makes me sad.

This book lives up to half its title. It is, indeed, a chronicle of political life--of the everyday rigors of traveling on a campaign plane, wearing suits that don't show stains, and eating hotel club sandwiches. That chronicle is interesting--for about ten pages.But Mary Cheney knows why people are (or aren't, if the Bookscan numbers so far are accurate) buying this book. They want to see how she, a lesbian in a committed relationship, grapples with having worked for George W. Bush even as he used his opposition to gay marriage to win the election. The implication of the first half of the title--"Now It's My Turn"--is that we'll hear where she stands.We do, sort of, but it's a dishonest reflection. Her characterization of Kerry and Edwards as "bad men" because they mentioned her during the debates reads as more heartfelt than any criticism she may have for Bush and his position. She tells the reader she considered quitting over the gay marriage amendment, but after that her troubles with her own side seem to have vanished, replaced with vitriol for any Democrat. An earlier Amazon reviewer said she could have replaced the word "Democrat" with "devil" and the book would have read the same, and that's true.The book reads terribly, by the way. It's littered with the same phrases over and over; "Which, indeed, they did" and "It was exactly the right thing to do" come to mind. Invading Iraq, dissembling to the press, picking a speaker to introduce her father; everything was "exactly the right thing to do." As I said, not exactly a reflective book. Instead, we're treated to constant self-congratulation, down to such petty achievements as the Cheney family beating the family of the other VP candidate onto the stage following the debate and the quick thinking required to come up with a gesture to John Edwards (sticking out their tongues) that wouldn't draw attention to the family.This was Mary Cheney's one chance to make a real contribution to the nation, and perhaps to atone for her support of Bush. As a book, and as atonement, "Now It's My Turn" fails miserably.

While I learned a great deal as to how the Army is organized and operates, the insights shared by the author serves as a guide for leaders in any organization. The collaborative nature of getting things done requires leadership. This book describes how to become that leader.The guide, the heart of which is based on Army Core Values, shares lessons seldom learned. It’s a blueprint to becoming a leader. Beyond the practical essential tools, the qualities described were not expected. For example, being kind, showing grace and empathy all while remaining disciplined enough to see things clearly with the long view. This is not how we often think of military leaders. But Mr. Floeter shows these are essential qualities for being an effective leader.The author gives well crafted examples by way of stories. My favorites include “A Message to Garcia”, where actions are not deferred by excuses or endless questions; and the “Disciplining of SPC Schmuckatelly” where essential qualities of a true leader are shown.The last chapter “Hard Truths” is essential reading. The words, without platitudes, spell out how dangerous an inherent choice of a warrior’s path is and the unique way it alters a human being. To be a leader in such an environment requires a level of self knowledge that demands as much practice as any PT.I highly recommend this book for all who wish to help lead any organization. It is good counsel to return to time and again.

I’m currently an Army captain serving in company command... I’ve read a couple other guides, but none that were as clear and concise as this one. The content was spot on and relevant, the doctrine sound, and was an easy read that I had a hard time putting down. I’ll definitely be recommending this book to my executive officer and platoon leaders!

This is my friend’s book. I’ve served with this man. I’m on my second read of this and there’s much to glean here. If you’re looking at serving in any capacity this is the book you should read.

The author, Levi J. Floeter, received his commission as an Army 2nd lieutenant from ROTC. There are four ways to become an officer in the Army: 1) graduate from the military academy at West Point; 2) graduate from a university Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program; 3) graduate from Officer Candidate School; or 4) receive a battlefield commission.ROTC produces officers for all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces within the Department of Defense (DoD). “ROTC has historically been the primary source of new officers for the Army, producing approximately 70% of the total each year. OCS produces around 8%, and West Point produces around 3.5%. There are also direct appointments for doctors and dentists.”The author has a unique manner of writing, as though he is speaking directly to aspiring officers. He discusses the ROTC courses, but also provides advice on how to gain access to West Pont as well as to non-federally funded military academies, such as the Citadel. He talks about the Army Schools for the infantry, armor, artillery, and others. First, this book is not for the person who uses Excel for storing passwords and making lists. If you haven't had experience with manipulating data with pivot tables, I would start with a different book. This book is for the advanced Excel user who wants to learn Powerpivot & DAX.It's not a reference either. Plan on reading and following/doing the calculations in the companion content.I have had the book for a week and have discovered new and amazing ways to analyze data. I highly recommend this book.

This book covers basics such as how to load data, how to create a basic pivot table, and how to do a basic model. It also goes into DAX, the language for creating formulas. The DAX section is extremely useful, but is at a higher level than the rest of the book. The DAX section was what I found most useful because I am already familiar with basic concepts like loading data and building pivot tables. I use the DAX section as a reference when working with PowerPivot.

Excellent text. This is a fantastic book. I wish I could give it higher, but I feel deceived, as the kindle preview had color screen shots. I bought the physical book because there was no way to buy the kindle version, and when I got it today I found this out. ADDITIONAL NOTE: I upgraded this review, because it is unfair to penalize the content and the authors, which are the best. And, their great next book on SSAS tabular is good too - but also in black and white even though the kindle preview is color screen shots.

Sometimes it's better to learn by just doing it. I stopped reading at Chapter 13. Information overload. The introduction chapters explaining Power Pivot are good. The examples are bad. I may reread the book after learning Power Pivot from another source and from practicing. I connect the book's theories to my experiences learning by doing.Two stars for the book plus one star for the authors' expertise.

The authors are well known BI gurus, who have unique insight into how the PowerPivot DAX engine functions under different conditions. This book was a slow read for me, with so much technical depth to comprehend. But it provides information on PowerPivot that I haven't encountered in other PowePivot books. I found myself reading sections over and over again to try to understand what was being explained. The material can be complex, and maybe I would have preferred a few modifications to the way the material is explained. But the information is there, and it is worth the work to conquer it, to become, as the authors say, a "DAX master".The only aspect I was disappointed with are the sample excel workbooks that go along with each chapter. At times I found them to be incomplete, in terms of following the examples that are cited in the text. This can be frustrating when trying to understand new concepts. However, the book is brilliant, so this doesn't discourage me from giving it 5 stars.

I have read the earlier book as well.This book is even better. It shows key differences between the previous version of PowerPivot as well as traditional Pivot in a detailed manner.It also shows how the approach needs to be different for PowerPivot vs PowerView based BI.I recommend this book to everyone who needs to go beyond Pivot Tables (which actually means everyone who creates reports in Excel). Yes. There is a constraint because everyone does not have Excel 2013. But from my point of view the business benefits you will get due to better analytics using PowerPivot alone will pay for the incremental cost of upgrade within few months!

I haven't gotten through the entire book yet, but I've been using it as a resource in my position where I'm currently an avid Excel user. Alberto and Marco have covered the full spectrum of what you can do with Powerpivot and provide a wealth of information on how to form and shape your data model for best use in reporting and analytics. I would highly recommend this book if you're getting started with Powerpivot.

I already had a dream book that I had referred to when I wondered what my dreams meant. I thought this book would be a good resource to take me deeper.It is so much more than I expected. Some other examples of defined terms include consciousness, intuition, premonition dream, projection, and shred letter.Furthermore, the author shows examples of dreams brought to her by others, which she interpreted using some the hundreds of techniques and principles in her book.There is so much information in the 318 pages of this book that it will be useful as a reference guide that readers can refer to on a regular basis. Reading about dreams can help a person remember their dreams, improve memory for dreams, although acting on a dream has more effect generally on future dreams than reading about dreams does. That's one of the sentences in the opening of this book. I find that I am attracted to that philosophy, as it suggests a workaround the problem of the "correct interpretation" of the dream. It relaxes one so that there could be some enjoyment simply in feeling a connection with the dream. That tone makes it a valuable resource for dreamwork, an attitude that really helps, is conducive to experiencing the value dreams have to offer. If you have recalled a dream and wonder "what it means," you'll find many chapters in this book that will provide you with specific instructions on how to develop an interpretation of the dream, to discover or create value from the dream in many different ways. It is not a book of case studies, or inspirational stories. Nor is it a survey of the state of the art of dreamwork. Clearly the book is for someone who comes already knowledgeable enough about dreams to want to get some tools, would enjoy some good insights on creative or especially conducive approaches, attitudes and the like on dealing with dreams and dreamwork. This book is very practical and deals with the nuts and bolts on dreamwork, as well as how to take care of your tools. What I especiallly appreciated was how the author would revisit the use of a particular "tool" in the dreamkit when it came to a different kind of dream. The book is for someone who is active in dreamwork and spends time on this activity. It's a good resource for a dreamworker.

I loved this outstanding book by Caitlin Atkinson, who both wrote and photographed this book. I recommend it to anyone who loves plants and crafts. There are 30 craft projects and over 250 pages.Each highly original craft is beautifully photographed first as a full page and then photographed step-by-step with very clear instructions. The crafts bring nature into your home in a uniquely creative way. There are lots of great craft ideas that are actually simple and doable.I’ve already tried my hand at the Living Wreath on page 184 and both my husband and I really love it. It was lots of fun to make and now I have a lovely wreath to use year round.

So many lovely creative projects! Can't wait to start on some of these. Nicely thought out book front to back.

Very unusual ideas that I had not seen before!

Not useful for me. May be able to gift it to someone who is more into this type of craft.

I enjoyed this book very much since it combined two of my favorite things...plants and crafts. The first part of the book gives information on the types of plants that work best for these projects, and advice on how to best care for them, while the rest gives detailed instructions for creating 30 different projects incorporating plants and other materials.Usually, when I buy a book like this, I feel I've gotten my money's worth if I like 50% of the projects enough to consider making them. This seems reasonable as tastes differ. So I was surprised and delighted to find that I liked about 90% of the projects in this book. That's not to say that I'll make them all, but they are all things I'd love to have in my house.The instructions for each project are well organized and supported with numerous photos. There are descriptions, with photos, of what tools and supplies you will need, as well as step by step instructions for creating each project. I'm a bit tool-challenged, and not all that crafty, so seeing all this detailed information really gave me confidence that I could actually create these beautiful things.The layout of this book is exceptionally well thought out. The photos were lovely and the layout on each page was a pleasure to view. I found it enjoyable just to look through it. I was very impressed with this book and highly recommend it.Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

All projects are highly original and the final articles are striking. They include a Planted Chandelier, a Threaded Leaf Wreath, a Living Diorama, a Water Sculpture Garden, a Lava Rock Bonsai, a Tillandsia Nest, a Lush Vertical Garden, a Staghorn Fern Shadow Box etc. Each project details materials and tools needed with clear and easy to follow step-by-step written instructions for completion of them. There is a clear photograph accompanying every step.This book is filled with stunning photos of both the finished projects and the step-by-step process to getting there. Not surprising really when it is known that the author is a photographer by trade! As well as the plants and botanicals, materials needed for the projects include wood, glass, clay, dry concrete mix, sand, gravel, florist wire and many more. A variety of DIY and gardening tools are also required. There is a detailed section on plants for the home, together with information about the use and care of them.Many thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this book. I have written a voluntary honest review. Unfortunately, this book is not what I thought it was going to be. I was hoping that I could do a number of these projects with some of the students that I teach, but I believe that the vast majority of these will be too challenging for them. For this reason, this review is based with a more appropriate target audience in mind - all the budding artistic/creative gardener and DIY enthusiasts.

The beautiful binding with gold imprints and closed book page coloration makes this a natural gift item. The pen drawing illustrations inside are exquisite. They are of framing quality. The recipes are a little different than what you might rxpect in the average Italian cookbook. The two health-conscious chef authors explain why. This id a charming cookbook and I will be gifting it to my foodie friends with a bottle of white truffle oil for Christmas.

I visited this restaurant a couple of weeks ago, and had some of the best food I had ever tasted. Pure and simple, excellent quality, I couldn't wait to get the book and start cooking! This book is everything you could hope for in a cookbook. The recipes are clearly explained, the ingredients are easy to get ( you probably have most of them), and the resulting dishes are absolutely delicious. I tried three recipes over the last holiday weekend, and my family and guests were delighted. The Sunday Sauce and Meatballs are wonderful! A bonus is the excellent narrative that accompanies the recipes; funny, practical and smart; you won't be able to resist trying this food. I collect cookbooks,and this one is going to spend alot of time in the kitchen with me, not so much time on the shelf.

Love this cookbook....it's not often you buy a book of this quality....I look forward to cooking these recipes & with Frankies olive oil. I will be giving these out for Christmas gifts to my chef members! I just can't say enough good about this book....perfect for beginners and well seasoned cooks :D

This is a nice readable book. It would be nice for someone with a massive collection of cookbooks that was looking for something just a little different. The best part is that after growing up in NYC most of the dishes in this book I have had while growing up. There are a few different ones I will try but most look really great and just reading thru them I can already tell the flavors will go together very well and the finished dish will be tasty. Next time I am up in the city I will have to make a trip to one of their restaurants.

I love reading this book, the chapter on equipment and pantry are worth the price of admission alone. You gain so much kitchen and cooking knowledge that you can apply to all types of cooking. The recipes are spot on and easy to follow. I highly recommend this book!

After enjoying an unforgettable meal at Frankies, had to order the book. I grew up in the neighborhood but had been away for a few years.My friends that stayed told me this was their favorite spot. Now I can try their recipes.

I live just up the street from Frankies, and can honestly say these recipes are exactly like they prepare them in the restaurant. The cavateli with brown sage butter is my go to, and I cannot tell the difference between the dish I prepare and Frankies.

Good book, wish the pictures in the middle were dispersed throughout the book.
