I bought this because I was texting my husband 30 times a day with questions about black holes and light and everything space-related that was blowing my mind. I am space-obsessed but don't have a very science-oriented mind. In fact, I flunked my college chemistry class and didn't do all that great in bio either. But this book is great. I think it talks down just a tad too much (like explaining the meaning of the word "ellipse", really?) but I appreciate that it's written more like a story and not so much like a science lecture that I would likely fall asleep too.To me, this is a great book for anyone interested in the universe and not very knowledgeable on it. It's a great overview to help you dive into everything going forward. And I'm reading this while watching Tyson's Cosmos series and the combination of the two is really great.
A curious sixth grader, interested in science, loved this. I got it for him because I thought it gave a fantastic treatment of astronomy and physics relating to space and time, at a general reading level, while the school curriculum's treatment of space was pretty shallow and repetitive. This eleven year old feels he has learned tons, and wants to read it over and over because it is so fascinating.

And time is indeed a personal thing, Hawking remind us in this charming book. If you are traveling close to the speed of light, your mississippi is much longer than mine. I am fooling around in Germany at low speeds relative to everything in this planet. So you can slow down time by moving very fast in relation to Earth. Using such well illustrated examples, Hawking always emphasize that the universe is strange and wonderful. He explains how time started at the big bang (our best guess) also discussing the different time definitions used by Newton (fixed) and Einstein (relative). The whole thing converges to how physicists have been searching for a theory of everything as a function of time, of course.
The recent passing of Stephen Hawking inspired me to read this, his most well known book. If nothing else I saw it as a tiny tribute to a great man, great thinker and great contributor. I've always loved having the very basic understanding of physics and this science and found this to be a great little refresher. The style he takes is easy to comprehend and the complex subject is simplified enough to keep it interesting for this not overly technical. Any one who is remotely interested in how the world works should read this!
Stephen Hawking was an obvious genius, and you’ll feel a little bit of that genius rub right onto you when you read this book. This is the book for everyone who would love to have a better understanding of why time is relative as opposed to constant. Yes, that’s right. Time can go faster or slower, depending on things such as velocity and gravity. You will feel and BE smarter after you read this.
Having read A Brief History Of Time, I wasn't sure how much I would get out of this updated rewrite. I haven't sat down with each book to outline differences but as in the first book, Hawking is such an amazing teacher, I felt I understood everything he wrote. Until I tried to explain any of it to someone who had not read the book. It's a credit to such a brilliant mind that he is able to simplify what is extremely complicated physics and math so a non physicist could understand it. I took two courses in Calculus 35 years ago but Hawking requires no knowledge of any higher math for the reader to enjoy a terrific read
For a Dullard such as myself reading a classic, perhaps THE classic, layman' guide to modern Physics was surprisingly less laborious than I expected. Very interesting stuff. Stephen Hawking has done a good job of editing his first edition and making this one that much more accessible to the wee brained among us. I being foremost among them actually learned a few things.
