This book has invoked so many thoughtful, philosophical and introspective conversations between my children. We love the entire Citizen Kid series.

The ten year old friend of my nine year old daughter slept over recently, and the friend brought this book along with her. The girls spent the weekend "creating" their own country, writing its constitution, singing their anthem, designing the flag, etc. They had a FABULOUS time! Along the way, we had some really good discussions about who might want to live in their country, how their country would be ruled, and more.My daughter's friend, who is traditionally schooled, said this was her favorite book. I could easily see why. I homeschool my children, and am purchasing our own copy of the book to use in future lessons about civics and citizenship. I would recommend this book for upper elementary level children. This would be an especially good book for gifted children (like my daughter and her friend) who need creative outlets and "outside the box" academic challenges.

Easy to understand and hopefully I can be able to build a usable model in my classroom for the students to create and take ownership of their own country. I wish it would have inter-country relationships or how a country interacts with other nearby countries.

One of my favorite books to really teach kids the value of organization and what goes into developing a country.

My class of 3/4s loved it

Good book.

We used this book as a 4-week unit study in our homeschool group. Each week we would read one chapter and complete the assignments (creating a national anthem, writing laws, creating a map, etc.). We tied it into US History by discussing how each step tied into the creation of the United States (Betsy Ross making the first flag, Continental Congress, comparing the president's power to the power of the King of England over the 13 colonies). The 4th week, each child did an oral presentation of how their country would be run. GREAT BOOK!

Funny, fun and educational. Homeschoolers and teachers could easy take this book and run with it giving their 3rd - 6th graders a real eye-opener on what it takes to create, build up and run a country while absorbing facts and advice that teach about government, elections and all things related to running a country.

I didn't care for this one as much. A bit disappointing after the amazing The One and Only Ivan.

Katherine Applegate's Crenshaw is a hard book to classify. Technically it's a YA fantasy novel, but that description would cause readers to expect something light and fanciful. And that is far from the case with Crenshaw. True, it's about a boy named Jackson and his imaginary friend, a man-sized talking cat named Crenshaw. But he's a boy having to face some adult problems that may be beyond an imaginary friend's ability to help with.Jackson is a nine-year-old boy who lives with his mom and dad and his younger sister Robin. In an apartment. That they're about to be evicted from. Which means that they'll be having to live out of their run-down family car. Again. Because the family has on-going financial problems. Which in turn are partly because his dad is suffering from multiple sclerosis which is steadily diminishing his ability to work. It's a lot for a nine-year-old to have on his shoulders, even with the help of an imaginary friend.Applegate does an excellent job showing how these problems are playing out through Jackson's eyes, and you really feel for him as he relates what's happening as you can see in this particularly moving section:"After I got ready for bed, I lay on my mattress and thought things over.-- I thought about the stuff I'd put in my keepsakes bag. Some photos. A spelling bee trophy. A bunch of nature books. My teddy bear. A clay statue of Crenshaw that I'd made when I was in second grade. My worn-out copy of A Hole Is To Dig.-- I thought about Crenshaw and the surfboard.-- I thought about the purple jelly beans.-- Mostly though, I thought about the signs I'd been noticing.-- I am very observant, which is a useful thing for a scientist to be. Here's what I'd been observing:-- Big piles of bills.-- Parents whispering.-- Parents arguing.-- Stuff getting sold, like the silver teapot my grandma gave my mom and our laptop computer.-- The power going off for two days because we hadn't paid the bill.-- Not much food except peanut butter and mac and cheese and Cup O Noodles.-- My mom digging under the couch cushions for quarters.-- My dad digging under the couch cushions for dimes.-- My mom borrowing toilet paper rolls from work.-- The landlord coming over and saying "I'm sorry" and shaking his head a lot.-- It didn't make sense. My mom had three part-time jobs. My dad had two part-time jobs. You'd think that would add up to two whole actual jobs, but it didn't seem to.-- ...-- I figured my parents had a plan for making everything okay, because parents always have a plan. But when I asked them what it was, they said stuff like maybe they could plant a money tree in the backyard,. Or maybe they could start their rock back up again and win a Grammy Award.-- I didn't want to leave our apartment, but I could feel it coming, even if nobody said anything. I knew how things worked. I'd been through this before.-- It was too bad, because I really liked where we lived, even though we'd only been there a couple of years. Swanlake Village was the name of our neighborhood. It didn't have any real swans. But all the mailboxes had swans on them, and the community pool had a swan painted on the bottom.-- ...-- Swanlake Village wasn't a fancy place at all, just a regular old neighborhood. But it was friendly. It was the kind of place where you could smell hot dogs and burgers grilling every weekend. Where kids rode their scooters on the sidewalk and sold lousy lemonade for a quarter a cup. It was a place where you had friends you could count on, like Marisol.-- You wouldn't have thought it was a place where people were worried or hungry or sad.-- Our school librarian likes to say you can't judge a book by its cover. Maybe it's the same way with neighborhoods. Maybe you can't judge a place by its swans."Crenshaw does draw on other sources for some of its inspiration, particularly when it comes to imaginary friends. One is Mary Chase's classic 1944 stageplay Harvey, where the main character's best friend is a six-foot white rabbit no one else can see or hear. Another is the 2007 film Ratatouille where the rat Remy frequently has conversations with the spirit of Auguste Gusteau, the human chef he idolizes. And yet another is the "Hide and Seek" episode of the animated TV show Teen Titans where one of the characters has an imaginary friend, an invisible giant stuffed bear named Bobby. And in a special turn, Crenshaw turns to Ray Bradbury's "I Sing The Body Electric" for what imaginary friends do when they're not around the humans who imagined them. Applegate also draws on more scholarly sources for the reasons kids have imaginary friends, but it's clear that she is on the side of those who believe that just because someone is imagined, it doesn't mean they aren't real. AndHighly recommended with the caution that this deals with some serious subjects that some readers - young or adult - may not want to think about. But probably should.

This book does a phenomenal job of being engaging and fun despite material that could so-easily delve into dark and disturbing. The author walks that precise line of creating empathy without creating too much distress for young readers. I have no qualms letting my 10-year-old or even 8-year-old read this one. It *does* talk about homelessness and its side effects for a young child, but somehow the imaginary friend (who's introduced in the first line as a surfboarding cat who's holding an umbrella) makes things lighthearted and safe, even while you recognize that he's a sign of emotional distress.FOR PARENTS - CONTAINS SPOILERSIf your child is sensitive (like mine are), it may help to know that the imaginary friend is silly enough to break up the tension on a regular basis. Many of the most-difficult moments of the book happen in the past (from the previous time this boy had to live in the van with his family and their puppy for 14 weeks), so you know they eventually made it out. And although he mentions having seen his dad cry (the only time he had seen such a thing), most of the darker moments focus on things like the van being smelly, or how he didn't like his younger sister kicking him in her sleep (so he decorated a cardboard panel to put in between them). There's a lot of generosity/kindness from strangers, which helps a lot even though they *were* still living in a van, which keeps you empathizing with them but not spiraling into despair. There are also a couple of places where he says "I know other people have it much, much worse, but I still hate this," which again triggers empathy and understanding, without minimizing what anyone has to go through... making you aware of those darker stories, but not taking you into them. Finally, fortunately, at the end of this novel, the family finds a temporary place to stay (an old, run-down, one-room apartment) so again it's clearly not sunshine and roses, but hopeful. The author truly does a masterful job of introducing this difficult topic in a way that creates empathy while being enjoyable and (for most kids) non-traumatizing.

I bought this book and "The One and Only Ivan" (both by Katherine Applegate) for my grandson's upcoming 11th birthday. If you have read the other reviews, then you know this is about a large cat named Crenshaw, who is an imaginary friend to a 10 year old boy who is often hungry and facing the real possibility that he and his family may again be homeless and living in their SUV. It is a great story! I know the subject matter may seem a little sad for children, but really the story is uplifting in it's own way. I always read a story before I give it to my grandkids to read. I WANT to know what they are going to be reading and if it's appropriate for them to be reading it! This was a very enjoyable read and I highly recommend it for 10-100 year old readers.

I personally didn't read this book for more than a few pages (it seemed intelligently and engagingly written). My 11 year-old daughter however devoured this book. She simply loved it. She is a cat/pet person but beyond that she could empathize with the male protagonist Jackson (who has an analytical mindset like her older brother), even though she has not had the trials he encounters. That is the sign of a well written story. It is a serious story, but still enjoyable to read. I will be getting more Applegate novels for my daughter.~ Kort

great for learning Access, that if you're a dedicated person when it's come to self-studying. It's probably smart to form a study group.

This book does a relative good job teaching you access. There is no accounting part. The author tries to build a database to be used as an accounting system. The database is so simple and badly desingned that I cannot extend it for a real business database. You won't see anything close to an accounting process not even a single journal or a G/L. If you want to learn access you have many other better and less expensive options.

the book is really like a new one but the it takes 15 days for the book to arrive at my place

Excellent book saved my ass so many times but was honestly easily replaced with Google Translate offline app. The phonetic pronunciations were easily the best part of this book but many phrases felt geared for UK speak vs American.

Small, handy book that is easy to take on your travels, which I plan to do. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Great for common phrases and looking up different words. Phonetic pronunciation helps if you have no experience with Spanish vowels/alphabet.

I like this book but wish to have more updated information. But, it is still good book for ABC kids to learn about their culture and tradition. It come with games and information that my suitable for american born children. Because those fortune cookies only created and popular in US because of Chinatown restaurant created that as a sweet treats. I am born and raised in HK and I never have one or see one until coming to US. So, it is not traditional to Chinese culture but it is at US Chinatown only. So it is a book for american born Chinese (ABC). :)

I have several books on Chinese New Year which I share with my son's class every Lunar New Year and this book tops them all! It is well-written, organized and has excellent vivid photos and detailed facts and descriptions. I will definitely buy this again for my friends and any children who are interested in learning about Chinese New Year.

Bought for my son’s 1st grade class to learn about Chinese New Year. He brings in red envelopes stuffed with fake money to celebrate with his classmates every year and talks about the Chinese traditions. It’s nice that this book also mentions the Lunar New Year celebrated by other Asian cultures - albeit it’s only 1 sentence.

Love this book! Great overview of Chinese New Year. The large photographs are amazing, and my kids and I enjoyed looking at the details close-up!

Great photos full of color and facts about this celebration. I used this in my pre-school (as a point to look and discuss) as well as my son's kindergarten class (I skipped over some of the longer paragraphs), but my 8 year old enjoyed reading it in entirely. The kids all had their eyes glued to the pages and were excited to learn about the interesting points of this cultural celebration.

Bought for a 6 year old reading level. Lots of pictures and good narrative to go with it. I find that you can't go wrong with Nat Geo series books. Love them!

Great introduction to the holiday for my 4-5 year old preschoolers. Bright pictures, clear text. Happy with purchase. I would recommend and I would buy again.

Very informative, comprehensive, and with an international perspective.

Review

"Carter’s story should inspire and disturb all of us as it challenges our cherished and comforting assumptions, our tightly held claims and possessions, our glib tropes, including those about about home, race, religion, self." —Vincent L. Wimbush, Director, Institute for Signifying Scriptures"Carter tells the story of his interfaith pilgrimage with Daisaku Ikeda, and how Ikeda’s challenge has led him to a new self-understanding, renewed hope, and a revitalized faith. This is the kind of book that can literally change a person’s life." —Lewis V. Baldwin, Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies, Vanderbilt University"Carter is a truly cosmopolitan global preacher and thinker. From his American, South Asian, and East Asian religious identity, he is a true disciple of Jesus, the most distant of all his mentors, carrying on Jesus’ work in extraordinarily creative ways. Read this book!" —Robert Cummings Neville, Professor of Philosophy, Religion, and Theology, and Dean emeritus of the School of Theology and Marsh Chapel, Boston University"This beautifully written memoir is a testament to the power of the inward journey toward existential discovery, a pursuit too often impeded by social barriers. Universal and immanent, truth beckons to us beyond the boundaries of geography, nomenclature, or faith tradition. It will draw us nearer, Carter teaches, if only we muster the intellectual courage to let it light our path." —Larry O. I have been practicing Nichiren Buddhism for almost 20 years. I am honored to have Daisaku Ikeda as my mentor in life.Dr. Carter understands Daisaku Ikeda's heart better than many of my fellow practitioners. He explains the concept of Kosen Rufu (world peace) more clearly and accurately than I have ever heard it before. This book is an amazing introduction to a the Nichiren Buddhist practice from someone who does not practice. And, for those of us who do practice, it is a strong affirmation of things that we know, from our personal experience.Likely the best parts for me were two:Dr. Carter truly and profoundly explains the mentor and disciple relationship, which is central to my life. (In fact, so much so that I have "mentor and disciple" tattooed on my right forearm.Dr. Carter also does an amazing job of bridging the gap for something that has challenged me for a long time. As a Buddhist, I believe that my prayers are self-directed. I am not praying to an external deity but to unlock my internal wisdom. On the contrary, I have always seen prayer in the Abrahamic tradition to be outwardly beseeching. Still, there can be no question that they are both effective and powerful. Dr. Carter's explanation of this apparent contradiction is the best I have run across.Buy it. You will not be sorry!

Ph.D preacher, educator, and direct disciple of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. demonstrates how be open to other spiritual teachings can enhance a Christian's ultimate path in service and understanding. This guy is professor and dean at a large university and intellectual heavy-weight. He speaks on achieving world peace not through making everyone the same, but by respecting the dignity of each individual and creating a culture of non-violence. Central ideas in Dr. Knig's theology, the dominate theme of Nichiren Buddhists (Soka Gakkai), and many other religions and philosophies.Read the first chapter for free using the free Kindel app on your PC, tablet, or smartphone. It is completely interesting all the way through, though chapters 11-14 are dynamite.

Inspiring insights into Non Violence from both eastern and western traditions. Beautifully written by a remarkably bright and thoughtful scholar and man with faith in humanity.

Dr. Carter has been a friend of SGI for a long time. To have had an impact such as he had with Dr. Ikeda and buddhist humanism is great!

This is an insightful spiritual memoir. It links a commitment to social activism from the perspective of a Christian and a Buddhist in a way that is both personal and theoretical. It grows from a friendship as well as a mentoring relationship in the desire to contribute to a shared vision and call to action.

Absolutely excellent book! Very insightful. Got it for Christmas presents all the way around.

A read as met the Buddhist teacher in my younger years and the minister a few years back and love his open mind and a saying I will never forget. Great read! Makes you really think.

This book is amazing. Wonderful to know that people from different faiths can learn from one another and make our world a better place.

#150,703 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I found the book very creative and the 'place' was well described. I had a hard time connecting to the characters and I felt like some of the character elements were only plot devices with no other reason for existing. I was really excited about the idea of the book, it didn't live up to my hopes. This author has promise though and I hope he continues to hone his writing skill.

The writing style is... ...ummm… ...adequate, and the story is slow to start. The coincidences that drive the plot are a little bit of a stretch. On the other hand, conceptually, the post-climate collapse world that it creates is phenomenal, and once things get going, it is genuinely original and quite good. In a world of endless sequels and derivatives, that's more than enough to make it worth a read.

The idea that much of humanity would be living on offshore oil rig-type structures is an interesting one, but the author never provides an explanation, much less a plausible science-based one, for how the world got into the state described. The past is revealed in glimpses. There are hardly any cisgender heterosexual characters and yet the world of the novel is hellishly overpopulated. It is unclear how a world in which most people are either gay or gender-fluid or both can produce so many children. It is a fun mirror of our own world that nearly all of the rich people are urban real estate owners, but not enough fun to keep the reader motivated. This is a tough book to slog through.

Sam J Miller has become a trusted go-to-author when I venture out of my literary bubble to sample genres I don't typically read--in this case, science fiction. In some ways, I suppose, I'm not therefore particularly qualified to review Blackfish City. But I'm giving it a go nonetheless. This is a story of exiles and brokenness--the kind of brokenness where the spirit enters. Indeed, the disease that afflicts many of the characters is known as the breaks. It is part redemption song and part jailbreak. Like the chaotic city where it is set, the novel's initial (deliberate) incoherence, which is really a rush of strange detail and invention, begins to resolve into something more familiar. In a nutshell, a strange woman with an orca familiar appears in the city and becomes the subject of much speculation and fear. People project on her their own conflicts and desires. She gradually assembles her chosen family in the midst of an outbreak of less-than-civil war between the "shareholders" (powerful, rich and shadowy figures who are the city's owners in every sense) and a female-led crime syndicate. The family then seeks to obtain its end (no spoliers) but is met with no shortage of abrupt and gruesome deaths (Miller is not afraid to kill off key and beloved characters!).Miller has invented here a merciless world, but with enough redemptive characters to give the bleakness a rest and leave room for hope. Although I thought the last portion meandered perhaps a bit too long after the jailbreak and some of the class and gender conflict hung a little heavy on the prose (hence no 5 stars), Miller's imagination left me breathless.

Blackfish City is an easily digestible novel because the material is exceptional and the pace is quick enough to captivate attention. I highly appreciate original fiction, and was apprehensive about the similarities to Phillip Pullmans "His Dark Materials", however, as the author delved further into specific topics (I don't want to spoil!) it was easier for me to separate the two. I noticed many reviews critiqued the editing, and I agree. Luckily, the need for a strong edit doesn't distract from this unique work. Despite the plethora of content and themes, there aren't too many loose ends. I hope the author continues to write in this universe, but if not, I'll definitely follow his spirited work.

I loved this book! Starts off with a number of different stories of different characters. Then the stories converge into a whole story. Some of the characters come together. Some die and come together anyway. And it all culminates in a glorious, chaotic, unexpected end. I found myself seeing the end approach without a clue as to how it was going to end. Then the felt so much like this was the only way it could have ended!

Blackfish City is a stylishly written novel with bright, clean, razor-edged prose and a vividly imagined, plausible near-future world. The stakes of the plot are high, and the novel packs quite an emotional heft to it. Miller particularly deserves credit for mostly managing the rare and delicate balancing act of having fundamentalist ideology as one big negative force in the plot but not failing to see fundamentalist characters as three-dimensional individuals with comprehensible human motivations.I do have one critique, though it's subtle enough that it took me days to put my finger on it. Without spoilering: psychographically targeted propaganda plays an important role in the worldbuilding. This is sharp, up-to-the-minute stuff. However, I realized that it made me just a little uneasy that, while the vast majority of the book is very much "Show, don't tell", that isn't true of this important social/plot point. As the readers, we're never suckered into falling temporarily for the fictional propaganda. And so there's just the slightest touch of "Well, at least we're too good to fall for that" that the sensitive reader can be left with.

Beautiful. Relevant. My heart wants this tale not just to be about a rallying cry for justice, about a story that is a catalyst for social change and upheaval to corrupt systems, the triumph of the just and the good, but for it to BE that catalyst, that rallying cry. Because while it is about our future, about a fantasy of a strange time that might almost come true or may never, it is also a story about us. It is the story of the fall of our civilization. Maybe the fall is necessary. But we have to land somewhere.
