My onsite-teacher for my teaching certificate internship recommended this book to me as a must read and boy am I glad. I believe first-year teachers can benefit greatly from this resource. Spricks applies the positive behavior classroom model, but unlike other books on the subject I felt like this was a comprehensive classroom management strategy. This book gives the proper framework and year/month/daily breakdown of classroom management skills. It is appropriate for Elementary through secondary school. I'm a middle school year and have used plenty of the reproducibles from this book in my classroom. My school already has a well-thought out behavior discipline plan, but I worked in the CHAMPS model into our school-wide plan. As a first year teacher, I received several compliments for my classroom management style and everything I learned was from my onsite-teacher and this book.The book is broken down into several different modules. By the end of reading, you will have a before school plan and during the school year plan; for example, the structure of my Welcome Letter, syllabus, procedures/policy sheet, parent contact sheet, etc. all came from this book. Also, positive behavior reward system is mentioned and reward suggestions ideas and implementation are all provided. After reading several behavior management books, I love that this book does this for each module; for example, the author will explain the strategy, purpose, provide examples and offer suggestions of implementation, a calendar or timetable suggestion, and at the end of the module there is a reflection piece. I believe this book was written for teachers during workshops because the reflection piece is about what you are currently doing in your classroom and how you can implement what was discussed in the module as well as a pair/share lie reflection where you meet with another teacher to review the module.
This is an amazing book! My school is implementing this system this fall so I decided to do some prereading. I wish I had this book as a first year teacher! Many of the suggestions are some that I have already learned through teaching experience, but this was still a great review before school started. The new stuff, including the actual CHAMPS system, sounds like a great way to manage a classroom. I'm excited to try it out!
I had taken the all day course with Dr. Sprick and already have the book. I bought this one for my wife who is entering the teaching profession as well. This approach to behavior management has saved many a teacher who was looking at a "development plan" due to class management issues. Have class management problems? This book requires a lot of work. It is not an easy read and not easy to implement but this book looks at classroom management as more of a hard core science than kids.
I bought this with the thought of using some of the ideas in my behavioral consult job.
This (or its latest edition)is a great resource for any teacher who wants to maximize his/her instructional time and minimize the down time that comes from dealing with off-task or inappropriate student behaviors. Sprick's work complements the 21st Century Classroom initiatives and provides the flexibility and latitude to make it work in any elementary or secondary classroom.
I highly recommend this resource to teachers for teaching and class organization and discipline. It is the best!! I used it successfully and have given it to new teachers and teachers who need a lift. It really works!!!
Currently, I am a student at BYU and my PBS (Positive Behavior support) Professor--Department Director--uses this manual extensively in her lectures and/or material references. I felt the information in it was valuable enough to merit purchasing the book for my classroom.
