Had I known this would read like a romance/suspense novel, I wouldn't have chosen it. Fortunately I "bought" it via Kindle Unlimited. My first clue of romance writing was reading, in detail, what every woman was wearing. My alarm bells were ringing when I read about the "rise of her breasts" as another description of the main character. Way too juvenile for me and the actual story was a basic serial killer plot. I made it just over halfway through and couldn't make myself go further. Based on the majority of reviews loving this book, I guess I'm in the minority. I only wish there was a rating that indicated it was a romance type novel.
This was a fast paced novel and kept you guessing until close to the end. I am a physician so am always paying attention to the medical aspects of novels and she hit them right on. I liked the protagonist, a tough, tiny and seasoned woman FBI agent, who has seen the underbelly of society and had put up multiple layers of defenses to protect herself. She had been a victim of a crime of passion as a teenager and became an FBI profiler to try to give herself forgiveness for the failings she felt she made when she and her father were shot by an unstable boyfriend. She finds herself in San Antonio though, evaluating a case of a murder that was exactly like a serial killer that she had already prosecuted. She and Theo, a local detective who recently moved there from Chicago and is also an odd man out because of being new and taking a spot that someone local was knocked out of the running for, become partners. As they wade through the clues, it becomes more convoluted and confusing, especially when another serial killer's MO is found in another murder.I listened to the audio book with occasionally reading the kindle version in between. The voice actor /reader was terrific as well. I could not stop listening and reading, much to my husband's dismay.I HIGHLY recommend this book.
I read 87% of this book before deleting it! I felt that the explicit descriptions of the killer's self gratification were a little over the top and not at all necessary, it had already been established that he was a deviate!! When it came to the sexual encounter of the partners it was extremely pornographic!! The story line was amazing and the explicit sex was really not necessary to the story line. I had planned to give this five stars but just couldn't give it more than three!! The description of this novel should have included "explicit sexual content"!!
You are not going to want to put this book down for any reason. I was riveted.I'm not very good at book reviewing but I know a good, well written book when I get one in my hands. The Last Move is every bit of that. It is a stand alone so you've not met the players.I don't need to repeat who the characters are, you'll find out for yourself. I don't even need to tell you what it is about. You'll find out. What I will tell you is you'll never guess the culprit until Burton wants you to...but you'll love how it plays out...no fair peeking. It could ruin this fantastic book for you. I love playing the guessing game and hope you will also.
This is my first book I have read by Mary Burton and certainly will not be my last. There are two major crimes committed close together, one in Utah and the other in San Antonio, Texas. The crime in San Antonio appears to be the work of a copycat so Dr Kate Hayden from the FBI profiler is called in to assist. Kate is very short on stature, very driven in her work and considered by a lot of her peers to be rude and a plain our over all bitch. She is teamed up with Detective Theo Mazur, the two work well together and seem to understand each other right off. Soon there is another murder and the two are concerned if this may be the work of a copycat killer. Read for yourself to find out what happened in Kate's life that caused her to join the FBI. The plot is excellent and you find yourself guessing most of the time, the how and why are explosive.
I normally don’t have the inclination to read this type of story, but amazingly I am so glad I did. I normally go with the “black-ops†type of books, and I have never heard of or read any of Mary Burton’s books, this is changing now. I will be starting another one very shortly. Get comfortable and get to know this great author.
I have sped through over 12 of Mary Burton's books in the past 3 weeks. I pre-ordered The Last Move and again, with this one, she does not disappoint. I am only bummed that it is not part of a series as she did with Morgans etc. Not that it matters, but I found it interesting...EVERY male detective, DA, attorney or whoever else wears a suit are always donned with a RED tie. I have only come across one very brief character who had a dark tie.... save for the Texas Rangers series (Bolo ties). Just curious as to the reason, I guess! As prolific as she is already, I still am on pins and needles for a new Mary Burton book. I can't seem to find them all to download via Amazon Kindle. If you enjoy well-written murder mysteries with great plots that keep you turning the page to see if you are on the right track to solving the case then these are the books for you! The romantic relationships help develop the characters even more in my humble opinion. Especially when they are continued and referenced in the three-series sets. Go Ms. Burton!!!!
I gave this book a chance and I wanted to like it but it was SO awful. There was no character development and the dialogue was very basic and lacked creativity. I didn’t even finish it because I found all of the characters so boring and the plot was not engaging.
