About the Author

M. Wylie Blanchet was born Muriel Wylie Liffiton on May 2, 1891, in Montreal, Quebec. She married Geoffrey Orme Blanchet in 1909, but was widowed in 1926, leaving her to raise five children on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. For several summers Muriel, her children, and the family dog set off in a twenty-five foot motorboat, the Caprice, to explore the waters between Vancouver Island and the rugged Canadian mainland. They were on their own, with Muriel as captain, anchoring in secluded coves to tramp the wilderness, examining architecture and burial grounds in deserted native villages, and meeting the region's various human and animal inhabitants. Muriel wrote about their journeys, and was successful in having articles published in magazines such as Blackwood's and Atlantic Monthly. In 1962, the year Muriel died, Blackwood and Sons of Edinburgh, Scotland published The Curve in Time, which described several summers of the family explorations. In 1968, Gray Publishing in Canada printed a second edition of The Curve in Time, and since then it has earned a reputation as a Canadian classic.

A very interesting book in several regards. The concept of time curve was minor to the story but a twist to telling the story that was thought provoking . Combining the experience of 15 years of family cruises into one story line that could easily have been assumed to be one voyage was well done. This moved the story along rapidly and smoothly. For those with knowledge of, or an interest in, the Canadian gulf islands, desolation sound, and adjoining waters, this book provides a view into the historic experience of cruising this area, and the culture of First Nation peoples of this area and the early European nautical explorers. A highly engaging book, leading to a quick read.

I originally found Ms. Blanchet's book in a bibliography for an obscure book on kayaking and read it purely on speculation. I had no idea what I stumbled into. Now, having read it two more times and giving it as a gift on several occasions, I can say this is truly one of the most special books ever written.The stories of Ms. Blanchet and her children sailing up the Inside Passage during the 20's and 30's captured me in two ways. First was this mysterious window into a world long gone. Ancient native villages still looking as if their residents just left, lonely hermits on remote islands, a land unspoiled. Second was the story of a woman with and amazing strength and humble spirit. How she managed to use her dingy to tow the incapacitated power boat, disassemble the engine, then fix and restart a broken magneto is unbelievable, yet obviously true. I was inspired over and over again as has everyone I have given it to.I have space for exactly four favorite books in my library, I won't add another one unless one is removed. The Curve of Time will always be one of the four.

I gave this book 5 stars because it is a book full of stories, illustrated with lovely descriptions about the travels of a unique woman who chose to spend her summers exploring the shores of Vancouver island, the mainland and the many islands in between. Her writing is vivid, insightful and riveting. Great read!

An interesting read if you are familiar with the islands located within the inside passage of Vancouver Island and mainland B.C.. I've been to many of the locations the author covers in her book. At time a bit on the "folksy" side but still an interesting read about one tough lady who take herself and four young children on several on summer boating adventures in the waters off the B.C. Coast. .

Absolutely lovely! I discovered this book on a trip to British Columbia and fell in love with the endearing stories. Blanche writes about her summers with her children traveling up and down the coast of British Columbia in their small trawler. She writes of a time gone by when life was abit more simple even if complex. Highly recommend.

This is a fabulous book!! I have first read it years back, and recently took a freighter cruise in the same area. This was one brave and great mother for her children who accompanied her on the adventures. I decided to purchase a copy of this book so I could re-read it every now and then.

I read this book while cruising on a boat in the same waters Ms. Blanchet writes about. In many ways and places, only the years have changed and the landscapes and history remain relatively untouched by today's rapid change.Not only are the stories of her travels with her children on her late husband's boat interesting, but her writing and her perspective for the times are as fresh and current as if written just recently.I have gifted this book many times. It was gifted to me. This is a volume which sticks with you from the day you read it. When you gift it, you need to go back and read all or part again, just to take you back.As a woman filled with wanderlust and independence, Muriel Wylie Blanchet is one of my heros.I recommend this book highly to anyone who not only loves the outdoors, the waters of Vancouver and BC, but to any person who loves the spirit of adventure based on real life experience--not a made for TV event.

Read the book for a book group gathering in Iowa that included a friend who grew up on Vancouver Island and who joined us for the discussion. While I've paddled a canoe in the Queen Charlotte Strait, I felt a bit overwhelmed by the nautical terms and experience. I wished for a better map and more detail on how the kids fared as adults. Otherwise, I loved the stories and was delighted by this adventurous and brilliant captain/mother. The author captures the wildness and dangers of land and sea, and gives a nod to indigenous people, explorers and settlers.

book was just as advertised, perfect quality, actual content was heavy on the history portion with lots of filler text, and not as scientific/gemology centric as I would have hoped, but this is still great for getting to know how to identify turquoise, product from different mines, and avoiding fakes.

This is NOT a technical book about how it all works, but a book full of examples of how phones, computers, and their suppliers have improved privacy protection AND how law enforcement has continued to catch bad guys with effective investigations, despite lacking CONTENT of private communications. If you're like me and prefer to build understanding from the ground up (examples, cases) rather than trying to infer what politicians and public officials mean by broad, often hyperbolic, generalizations ("we're going dark"), this is a great book. It's short, it's to the point, it's well written, and an engaging read.

An up to date discussion of the tension between strong privacy protection for private individuals and law enforcement’s need to track and capture criminals. Every citizen of every democracy needs to read this accessible accounting by one of the founding experts in the field of information security. Especially important is the treatment of what’s at risk of cyberwarfare/cyber mischief by states and state-sponsored entities. Completely documented with footnotes and published by a renowned university press, yet totally free of academic jargon, this is a highly recommended read.

For a tech security professional, this book may not cover as much technical detail as one may want, but it covers a great broad range of the worldwide threats to cyber security .

[NOTE: I received a copy of this book through NetGalley.]An interesting foray into encryption and privacy, especially when considering the point of view of authorities who may need to access data on devices seized upon arrests.The author makes a case for strengthened encryption, and I feel this makes more sense than the contrary. The book is positioned around the main controversy of including backdoors to allow police and intelligence services to access a device, so that when they need to do it during an investigation, to apprehend a perp or to follow the trail of other people potentially involved, they could do so easily; whereas strong encryption would make it difficult or impossible. However, as has been discussed during actual investigations (an example given in the book involves Apple), there’d be no guarantees that in-built backdoors would be used only by authorities: if they’re here, sooner or later someone with ill intentions is bound to find them and use them, too.This ties into a general concern about how we have evolved into a digital age, and have to envision security from this perspective. Here also, while not going into deep technical details, the book explains the principles underlying this new brand of security; how this or that method works; the pros and cons of going towards more encryption or less encryption; what other solutions have already been tested, especially in military environments; how cyber-attacks can disrupt governmental operations in many different ways, such as what happened with Estonia and Georgia, and even the 2016 US elections. All very current and hot issues that deserve to be pointed at and examined, because whatever solutions get implemented, if they create less security and impinge on civilian privacy as well, they’re not going to be useful for very long (if ever).Also interesting, even though it’s not the main focus, is the concept of encryption methods needing to be made public in order to be really efficient: the more people have a chance of poking at them, testing them, and finding faults, the more these methods can be revised and strengthened.Conclusion: Not a very technical book, but that’s precisely why it makes a good introduction to such matters: easy to understand, while highlighting major concerns that not only deal with national security, but with our own (and with our privacy) as well.

This is a readable, engaging, yet technically accurate description of current threats against privacy and their effects on commerce as well as on individuals. It persuasively, with specific examples, outlines alternatives to the FBI insistence on back-door access to computer communications. If you think it is only individual privacy that is at stake, or if you think law enforcement requires back-door access in order to "keep us safe" and to "catch terrorists", you need to read this book. Haven't finished it but the descriptions of various security measures and the kinds of hacks and breaches that compromise systemsall seemed rather vague. I know it's not a textbook on cybersecurity but I would have preferred more detail in the explanations of how these things work. I was hoping for a gentle introduction to cryptography and cybersecurity that would have explained things in more detail than https being a secure browser protocol for credit card transactions and such. It kind of feels like the main point of the book is that allowing government back-doors into security systems is the wrong way to go.

Great resource for people that aren't sure what the pros and cons of strong encryption are. This book clearly explains why every day people need it, and why the companies that make secure products don't want to compromise them, or you, with weaker encryption or back doors.

Great read from an expert teacher. Susan Landau always gets right to the point, as an astute observer of the cybersecurity and privacy fields.

Historic Cookery, which first appeared in 1931, may have been the earliest cookbook of New Mexican foods to be publisher. Many of the recipes were heirlooms from the author's family and others were collected from villagers in Northern New Mexico. Fabiola Cabeza de Baca Gilbert's cookbook has been credited with the popularization of cooking with chile that led directly to America's love of native New Mexico foods. In traditional recipes there were no set rules for the preparation of food. The cook was expected to learn the recipes from her relatives. One of the great contributions of Historic Cookery is that for the first tine non-native cook was given exact amounts and measures for the preparation of New Mexican food. The author gives complete recipes for chile sauces, corn dishes, meats, cheese, eggs, and vegetables as well as salads, soups, breads, desserts, and beverages. Fabiola Cabeza de Baca Gilbert was born near Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1891. She was a noted educator, writer, and home economist.

Salas de Chile (Chil Sauces) Since many New Mexican dishes require a little chile sauce, it is appropriate to explain its preparation first. Ground or powdered chile may be purchased, but care must be taken that the product is pure. Sauce prepared from chile pods is more satisfactory. Chile Sauce--I (a)--3 T. fat 8 T. chile powder 2 T. flour 1 t. salt 1 clove chopped garlic 2 c. hot water Melt fat, add flour and garlic. Brown well. Add chile powder and blend. Slowly add water. Salt and cook until thick. (b)-- 24 chile pods 1 T. fat 1 qt. boiling water 1 T. minced onion 1 t. salt 1 clove chopped garlic 1 t. oregano Wash chile pods; remove stems, seeds, and white veins. Put in a kettle and pour boiling water over them. Cook until tender. Pass through a food mill or fruit press until all the pulp has been removed.

Northern New Mexican cooking is a culmination of some Spanish and some Mexican cooking as well as Native American cooking. When Northern New Mexican cooking and Native American cooking is combined you come up with some delicious dishes unlike any other place that you will find. This cookbook has been used in Northern New Mexico kitchens for generations. If you have ever been to New Mexico and wondered how that delicious chile is made, you have the recipe right here and you'll be amazed at how easy it is to make. This is a jewel to add to you collection.

Some great recipes. Small book. Some recipes are not complete as far as amounts of ingredients, but overall an interesting book of new/old things to try from New Mexico.

A classic, pointed out to me by a friend. Thin and terse, but as authentic as they come. Well worth the tiny investment if you love traditional New Mexico cuisine.

As a history buff, and collector of old cook books, I had to have this one after seeing it mentioned on PBS. It's a thin booklet, but contains a lot of information.

This was an awesome find. Many years ago my mother had a recipe book similar to this. It disappeared and I have been searching for one ever since. It was in great condition and arrived is stated time.

I found a reference to the book "The Good Life" BY Fabiola Cabeza de Baca Gilbert while reading "Feast of Santa Fe". After checking out "The Good Life" publication, I saw this simple yet honest title, "Historic Cookery" published in 2013, written by the same individual. Needless to say, I purchased it since I believe it predates other books published by the same author. Fabiola's preface is enchanting!

I was unsure what to expect for a $4.00 Cookbook, but I was surprised once I began reading it.... I started with the Chile sauce they were just like the ones I remember....I cooked a few of the Chicken recipes out of this cookbook they were like the one's I remember eating as a child at my Aunts house early afternoon... Great reference for the cook wanting to learn New Mexico's style of cooking... Small book, small price. Big flavor...

Overall, this is a good book to understand the issues surrounding dream interpretation in generally and the significance of dreams.
