I found this book to be an easy, quick read with a good amount of helpful information. I bought this book to prepare me for my first trip to China. I learned quite a bit of general attitude differences between U.S. and China, as well as very specific suggestions for behavior in China. I checked a good amount of the details with friends of mine who are from China, and they confirmed the veracity of these suggestions from the book.
I lived and worked in Asia for 4 years, based in Hong Kong, mainly involved in corporate acquisitions throughout the region. As a first timer, I certainly would have benefited from the author's insightful perspectives in relation to Chinese cultures and customs. The author, like me, learnt a lot very quickly, but he had the motivation to write a very useful and simple to read self-help guide. His humourous recollections are quite valid. For we "guilos", some strange but enriching experiences are delightfully explained. Perhaps a few more pictorials to illustrate would be helpful. I highly recommend this book for first time visitors to China and, indeed, those like myself who have been there before, but never fully comprehended many of the cultural nuances.
I purchased this book prior to my first trip to China and I'm extremely thankful for it!This easy-to-read, helpful and honest account of the authors experiences whilst living in China was great to get me prepared for my first work-related trip. I initially read the book in under an hour, found it entertaining and humorous, but at the same time very informative. During my first week in Shanghai I found myself referring to sections of the guide and smiling to myself as many of the quirks described in the book came true. Like other reviewers I found that this guide helped me keep calm, cool and collected in situations that I found down right confusing!A must buy for anyone looking to travel to China whether on holiday or business!
I have been to China many times, so this is just a refresher, but I did enjoy the book. Truly, the tips were useful and perhaps more useful since I have been back many times

This ebook was a great introduction and helped me immensely on my first trip to China. I definitely recommend it for the first timer like myself to help you on your way.
Having been to China for both business and personal time I wish I had this book first. My first trip was for business. I read this easy book Doing Business in China: Learn How To Effectively Negotiate With The Chinese and it proved helpful for a newbie doing business in China. Later on I have been to China several times over the years and the culture shock is still there. I wish I had read Easy Etiquette in China first. I can tell you though that the author is spot on with his observations! There are so many customs we as Westerners take for granted that are compltetly different in China. Business is done differently... Meeting, greeting and dining are different. The scariest for me personally though has to be the traffic where pedestrians have no right of way, and the lines on the streets (and even the stop signs) are merely for decoration.China is changing so fast, especially in the urban areas. Both the landscape and the culture are in flux. On the one hand it's nice to see China catching up with the rest of the world, but with that rapid change comes some loss of the old culture. The author has an entire chapter on this (Winds of Change).Overall a really good read and wealth of information you'll want if you're going to visit China.
I have to confess that I bought my copy a couple years ago before it arrived at Amazon hoever I am delighted that it will now be available to a wider audience.The author wrote this guide based upon his own experiences. He notes that during the first 6-9 months that he lived in China he was both frustrated and disappointed due to a combination of the enormous number of differences that confronted him [and his family] daily and to his own lack of objectivity when it came to assessing some everyday situations. For these reasons he eventually decided to put pen to paper.This is an easy guide to read [I read it in one session the first time] complete with personal anecdotes, good practical advice, and quite simply it is very entertaining too.Highly recommended by me.
