Has some of my family history In it. Wanted copies for my daughters.We’re all enjoying them. Thank you!

Great book on the history of the NWP except there isn't a single photo of the main Santa Rosa station anywhere inside the book. How can this be, the station was restored and currently exists today. I have seen many old black and white photos of this station from back in the day so it amazes me that the book didn't include one.

No one will buy this book for the text, there may be only 3 pages total. It is a book of photographic images and although many have appeared elsewhere, the editors have selected the very best and made sure that the printing quality is first rate. So this book is now the first place I turn for a photo of the NWP and only when I can't find it here do I turn to other references. It is well worth the money and I took away one star simply because of brevity -- you just can't cover much in 140 pages.

If you are interested even just a little bit in Cleopatra or her family, read this! I like Cleopatra's Daughter as well because like this novel it tells the tale of Cleopatra Selene, the daughter of Cleopatra VII, but differently. Both are great! I'm almost done with the Cleopatra's Daughter and I might be giving that 5 stars as well. I found this book at the library and ended up buying it on here to own it was that good! I am currently rereading this and have recommended it to a friend.

I enjoy historical fiction, so it's no surprise I loved this book. I went in not recalling much about Cleopatra Selene, which I think actually made the book better. Knowing the ending would have been a little anticlimactic.The book starts with a flash-forward that feels a little bit like a cheat. Exciting things happening! Then not-so-much. Still, the chapters dedicated to Cleopatra Selene's childhood in Egypt are interesting, if slow, and a good contrast to the years following her parent's death.Very little is actually known about Cleopatra Selene's life, so much of the book is from the author's imagination, but I thought it was a very plausible plot.War is violent. Ancient Romans weren't always nice, and viewed sexuality differently than we do. This book does not shy away from any of these facts. If you feel uncomfortable with this, CLEOPATRA'S MOON may not be for you, but overall I felt the author did a good job of keeping the material real without being gratuitous.Highly recommended for older teens and adults who enjoy historical fiction with a hint of romance.

The details in this book are so lovingly and lavishly filled in. The sights and sounds and smells make the story world come alive. But all those details also work to heighten the main character's emotions. The setting, the political climate, the religion...all of these worked together to be almost a character in the book. They were so important to the story, and I liked the faithful way the author handled the life and times of the ancient Romans and Greeks and Egyptians.I loved Cleopatra Selene and her commitment to her family and her calling. I loved best that she was a strong character who made her own choices and didn't feel compelled to follow her mother in every way.When I stop to consider all that this girl lost, I can scarcely take it in. She fell from such a height--being the entitled daughter of Cleopatra, the goddess queen who had such wealth and power. And from there Selene went to being a captive with no rights at all. How many people in the history of the world have been at either of those extremes? Because of her unique life, Cleopatra Selene is a fascinating character. And yet, because she also lost people she loved, she is universally relatable. Anyone who has lost a loved one can sympathize with Cleopatra Selene. On the one hand she's a powerful princess and on the other she's a little girl who has buried family members she loves. She's a wonderful character, and I feel the richer for having met her in the pages of this book.Happily Vicky Alvear Shecter did this girl justice.

The only daughter of Cleopatra VII of Egypt, Cleopatra Selene endures the deaths of her father and her mother before being dragged back to Rome by Octavianus to walk in his triumph. But her trials continue as she must survive traps set for her in Rome, and learn to become a queen in her own right.I love anything Egyptian (except Cleopatra VII, who just had to go and lose Egypt to the Romans), and Vicky Alvear Shecter delivers a wonderful novel with a strong heroine in Cleopatra Selene. While I knew the history regarding Selene's life, Shecter's version has many delightful twists and turns. The writing was atmospheric so I felt like I was actually trudging through the filth of the Subura in Rome, and the characters were all complicated and terribly human. And of course, being a sucker for romance, I adored the bit of a love triangle.This is a great book for lovers of historical fiction, especially those who enjoy the ancient world and scrappy heroines!

This book has transformed my classroom. My students are 5th graders and they have responded very well to the concepts in the book. The concepts are simple and yet far from what I was using before. I have so much more freedom to teach and students want to learn. I have one of the best classes I have ever had in over 20 years of teaching...I think it is me not the students. Set the standard, practice it and stick to it. It really is that simple. No reward system, no candy or prizes to buy, no disrespectful behavior and the list goes on. I bought this book at the end of one of my worst years, then read it 3 times over the summer (it is a quick read). I wanted the information to sink in, then I began to implement it on the first day of school. I'll never return to a rewards system again. This is all about personal responsibility and respect for all. Give it a try if you are a teacher that was as frustrated as I was!! So helpful. Thank you Michael for your wise words.

I'm a second-year teacher and had some classroom management issues. Using tips from this book has really helped me gain control of my classroom. Implementing a zero-tolerance policy while maintaining a non-emotional, non-judgmental attitude made a huge difference. I combined it with the rules from Whole Brain Teaching. Like this book, first violation is a warning, second is a time out and third is a note home. At first, everyone was in time out. I didn't even have anywhere to put them all. After a few weeks, behavior problems were greatly reduced. Now, there's hardly a need for time out or notes home.

This book should be mandatory reading in every college for pre-service teachers. I am going into my 3rd year, teaching summer school, and this has changed my life. I have travelled to PDs about behavior management, read psychology books, and countless articles all to no avail. This book doesn't contain any tricks or secrets. Just a simple and effective way to set up a plan and follow through on it. This book is truly a gem.

I am in my sixth year of teaching and this book stays by my nightstand. It is full of wonderful approaches to managing your classroom. A lot of good points, tips and techniques. I agree with another reviewer that it seems geared toward teaching lower grades, though. My 5th grade students would laugh at me and think I was being silly if I put them in timeout, as the book advises.

I think this purchase gave quite good value for the money and would recommend the book to anyone interested in phonetics, whether as someone working in relevant fields (actors, speech language pathologists, etc.) or just as someone who is curious about the basics of speech production, language change, language learning, and the way various people deal with expressing themselves in the wide variety of languages in the world. The author writes well and has organized his material well. He also writes with good but appropriate humor which, happily, facilitates his explanations of occasionally complicated matters. It's clear that he is writing for a diverse audience and some of the later chapters were clearly primed for those specialists working with people with various types of injury-based speech impediments, but even these chapters were quite interesting, and remarkably clear (for this reader, who has no background or direct knowledge of the field). If I am seemingly so high on the book (and I am) then why not five stars versus four. The answer is simply that I bought the kindle addition and, while the text and larger diagrams were clear and had no discernible problems, a number of the charts laying out portions of, for example, the International Phonetic Alphabet, were extremely difficult to make out, given the shrinking of the page necessary to fit on a Kindle screen. This factor was a bit frustrating (although readily understandable), but still didn't prevent the purchase being extremely worthwhile.

It helped break down phonetics very simply and well to me when I was struggling in the class. Couldn't recommend this book more as a supplement or on its own. It was recommended to me by my professor and I couldn't be thankful enough.

Fantastic book! For me, it's very helpful towards understanding Phonetics and the relationship to phonology. These topics are difficult and complex but this book, however you use it, will definitely make complex issues easier to understand. I intend to use this book heavily as I continue on in my studies.

I'm torn between 3 stars and 5 stars. I think I'll go with 3 stays, because the material is amazing but very difficult to get through. I wish it was more clear and concise, so that the reader would get through it quicker and began to practice it in their daily life.The first half of the book is life changing. I bolted through it in a few hours. It gave me a realization that pulled me out of a 9 month on and off depression. Since reviewing some of the material whenever I feel down, along with other resources, it gave me insight and clarity in my life that has sustained joy in the past 3 months. I hope it continues. The most significant part that brought me to awareness was his quote about his dog, that I have shared with many others. He says his dog is focused on enjoying the outdoors, chasing squirrels and sniffing flowers, not worried at all about being "happier" than the other dogs. I don't know if it impacts others the way it did for me, because it was incredibly applicable to my own situation. I realized the significance and potential of this book to impact my life after reading that, and began taking notes seriously.The second half of the book, in contrast to the first half... took quite a while to finish. It was dry, convoluted, and many of the same ideas are restated. It's his observations, theories and philosophy, and not really applicable to me. I finished it at last today. Just read the first half where it introduces the concept of self esteem, and MAYBE the last few pages on "The Seventh Pillar" and the appendices.

I bought this book from Amazon at the full price. It's a solid self-help book, and superb as long as the author sticks to the field of psychology. Parts I and II deal with establishing a solid definition of self-esteem and a cogent explanation of the Six Pillars. I found the sentence-completion exercises to be illuminating and helpful, and shouldn't be skipped if you plan to get the most out of the book. I may even purchase Branden's workbook for more sentence stem work.Unfortunately, Part III of the book strays away from psychology and into the realm of philosophy. Here, Dr. Branden sounds more like his ex-lover Ayn Rand. Honestly, you can skip Part III of this book and still get more than your money's worth.EDIT: Do read the final chapter, 18 - Conclusion: The Seventh Pillar of Self-Esteem. Appendix B is also worthwhile.

The pros: Branden certainly has a lot of insights from his experience as a psychotherapist. He presents many relatable stories and experiences that readers can learn from.The cons:The book is vague, and aside from the examples (which a person may or may not identify with), the advice he gives is very abstract. Take responsibility for your life. Accept yourself. Be conscious. I'm having a very hard time wrapping my head around these concepts because there are obviously a lot more steps needed to fully understand them. Especially "be conscious." The author falls short at explaining the idea of consciousness and how it relates to self esteem.The book is a difficult read. At first I questioned my own intelligence because I felt that I was reading certain sentences repeatedly without understanding what the author was getting at. Then I realized that Branden is a long-winded and sometimes contradictory writer, who doesn't fully respect the process of logical reasoning. This all became 100% clear to me when I realized he was a former lover of Ayn Rand. His writing is a worse version of Rand's writing. It's all the long-windedness and "what's-he-getting-at"s Rand is notorious for, but with less insights per page.

Please please please buy this. And highlight in it. And take notes. Then buy tons more copies and pass them out to everyone you care about.If you have an analytical mind in addition to self-esteem struggles of any kind- you will be doing yourself a huge favor by introducing this book and all the content in it.

It is difficult to write a review that is worthy of the greatness of this book. Poetically written, each essay is uniquely beautiful. It astonishes me to read a book from so long ago that is still so relevant today. I wish I could go back and have conversations with Emerson and Thoreau. Imagine the conversations they had with each other! It took me a while to read this, but it was important to me to take my time and understand each point he was making. This is the kind of book that one should reference throughout life. Emerson reminds us to trust in our soul above everything and let its force shine through. Only then will our lives have meaning.

Give this as a gift to your favorite nonconformist, the person who is unique and walks to their own drummer. It will make it easier for them to breathe in this world.

I've not been an avid reader most of my life. At 70 years and now retired I'm trying to catch up and have a strong desire to read the classics which have deep insights into life. This was not an easy book for me to read -- I read it slowly and tried to digest each chapter. There were several occasions where I got it! It took some effort I my part and I'm pleased I read it. I look forward to reading others by Emerson..

How can amazon sell this without checking first ?- page numbers are in random places on the page, not in the footer; looks like it was printed from a html- chapter title starts on the last row of the page- the book ends abruptly in the middle of the sentence,- not all chapters from the table of contents are in the book!

There are very few writers who have ever imparted more wisdom I so few words. If Thomas Jefferson is the spirit of America then Ralph Waldo Emerson was its soul. A person who reads the words of Emerson cannot help but be haunted by the feeling of an eternal season of spring infused with the eternal sadness of life's inevitable end. Emerson is required reading for all thoughtful men and women. This particular book is excellent and no one looking to purchase Emerson's work in the kindle format should hesitate to purchase it.

I had this on my wish list for a couple of years, and was really looking forward to it. I have bought many Dover Thrift editions before, but beware. It is completely the luck of the draw. Some are very nice, and usable. Others are like, well, this one. I may try to read it, but also may just consent to find a more user friendly copy. Sorry Dover...love you guys! There's no one like Ralph Waldo Emerson to give you a perspective on your life and how to live it. Timeless in most respects, it is heavy food for thought, and must be read slowly and carefully to find the essence of what he is telling you. Great for helping to sort out the day to day cares that weigh you down and helping you find the inner resources you need to carry on.
