Comiskey", is the first major modern biography of Charles Comiskey, the star player/manager of the famous 19th Century St. Louis Browns, and the founder of the Chicago White Sox. Today most people look at Comiskey as the so-called evil skinflint who "forced" Shoeless Joe Jackson and seven other players to lose the 1919 World Series on purpose in exchange for money from various gamblers.Hornbaker tries to present a fair and more roundly-balanced look at Comiskey's total life, not just his actions during the 1919 Series. The author covers Comiskey's upbringing in Chicago, his entry into professional baseball, his rise to stardom with the St. Louis Browns, and stints with the Chicago Players League team, the Cinncinati Reds, and his eventual ownership of the St. Paul team in the Western League. Comiskey would move the St. Paul team to Chicago in 1900, and the Western League would become the American League. As a powerful force in the new major league, Comiskey would become one of the most important and influential men in the early 20th Century world of professional baseball.Hornbaker has obviously done a lot research (each chapter in the book has numerous footnotes at the end--a nice idea which saves the reader from going back and forth to the end of the book). Comiskey certainly wasn't a saint--but Hornbaker makes the case that Comiskey's contributions to the game of baseball deserve more respect than they are now given.When it comes to the Black Sox scandal, Hornbaker attempts to put Comiskey's actions during it in a new light. Hornbaker points out that there was plenty of animosity between all owners and players in the late 1910s--not just Comiskey and his White Sox. The author shows how the scandal left Comiskey a broken man, and ruined his reputation (which, contrary to modern opinion, was very high before the Black Sox scandal broke).As a life-long White Sox fan, I'm obviously biased when it comes to this book. Charles Comiskey deserves to be known more than just a mean rich guy....whether some people like it or not, Comiskey was one of the most important figures in baseball history. Any hard-core baseball fan will want to read this book--especially if that fan is willing to put aside some pre-conceived notions. This book is a great addition to the library of baseball history.

This is a biography of Charles Comiskey, the great baseball player, manager and founder of the Chicago White Sox. It is very enjoyable to read, and very informative. I give it five stars despite the fact that from time to time the author draws conclusions without appropriate supporting facts. I believe that often the facts were not available to him because pro baseball teams have always been privately held, not publicly traded.I call the title fraudulent because the book has nothing to do with rehabilitating the reputation of the team following the 1919 Black Sox scandal. Only one chapter of 22 pages touches on the post-scandal years, and that chapter primarily deals with the team's acquisitions of many players, only a couple of whom I have ever heard of.There are a few basic themes to the book:1) Comiskey was well liked by everyone until 1915 and later. It seems that the stress from owning the team accumulated to the point that it affected his health, and his personality changed considerably toward irascibility.2) The popularity of pro baseball skyrocketed between 1905 and 1915. As a result, many team owners replaced their small wooden ballparks with large expensive steel stadiums. (I suspect that the players, seeing this spending, wondered why their salaries were not increasing accordingly.)3) A new league called the Federal League started in 1912, and enticed the players by offering to double their salaries. (I suspect that the players wondered if the American and National League owners had the same money available to spend on salaries, but chose not to. Furthermore, after three years, the Federal League went out of business, but it did not go broke. Rather, many of its owners purchased National League teams. So I suspect that the players wondered why, if the magnates had the money to spend when they owned the Federal League teams, they weren't spending it when they owned the major league teams.)4) The book and movie entitled Eight Men Out falsely portray Comiskey as a tightwad. On the contrary, the White Sox always had one of the highest payrolls in the majors.5) Gambling very large amounts on baseball games became very common after 1910. (So this gives the impression that not only the owners but also the fans were making lots of money on the games. Lots of people were getting rich except the players.)The author surprised me regarding two items:1) He gives very little time and space to Arnold Rothstein, the gambler widely considered to be the primary culprit.2) The author fails to mention the idea expressed in the book Eight Men Out that the idea that Chicago players were throwing the 1919 World Series was the world's worst kept secret.Some 45 years ago, I read Bill Veeck's second book, entitled The Hustler's Handbook. In it, he briefly mentions that one day in the White Sox offices he accidentally came across some documents which indicated that the Chicago Cubs had thrown the 1918 World Series. (There is now a book available on that subject.) This suggests that the major league players might have been accustomed to the concept that games were being thrown.

Excellent book! Very much enjoyed reading through the life and times of Charlie Comiskey. This book is very well researched and paints Comiskey in a very different light from what I have been led to believe my entire life of baseball fandom. His early career in baseball is well covered as his relationship with Ban Johnson (including how this may have led to some of the fallout to Comiskey's reputation from the scandal of the Black Sox).The book starts off a bit slow and dry (for me anyway) but things really pick up as we get into the period of time when Comiskey is a baseball owner in the Western League and how that turns into his running the Chicago White Sox. Very enjoyable read with lots of colorful anecdotes. Highly recommend this book for any White Sox fan or anyone interested in the Black Sox Scandal.

About the Author

Nivaldo Tro is Professor of Chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990.   He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum.   He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution.  Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin layer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces.   He has been honored as Westmont's outstanding teacher of the year three times and has also received the college's outstanding researcher of the year award.   Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Ali, Kyle, and Kaden.  In his leisure time, Professor Tro enjoys mountain biking, surfing, reading to his children, and being outdoors with his family.

I have just bought this brand new 3rd edition and compared it with my 1st edition. They are almost exactly the same, even down to the page numbers. This is an old scam by textbook publishers, but usually they will at least change around the table of contents and put in new diagrams, photos and tables. Not so with this title.And if the 1st and 3rd editions are almost exact copies, then I'm sure the 2nd edition would be fine too.Also, do not think that you need to buy the "Custom Edition" for your school, it's just the campus bookstore's and publisher's way of keeping you off Amazon and charging you double for an already overpriced book.

Chemistry: A Molecular ApproachEven though it says twice in the description that the ebook comes with Mastering Chemistry, and it is the first result with an ISBN search that includes Mastering Chemistry, it actually doesn't contain Mastering Chemistry. False adverting at its finest. Chatted with support and all they would do is refund my money so I can order a hardcover. I can't go without a text while in a class. Very bad customer service.

Chemistry is my least favorite subject and the one I struggle with the most but this textbook provides lots of helpful examples that have step by step explanations. This is one of the few textbooks I've actually read and worked through completely and it doesn't disappoint. I went from getting solid C's in chemistry to an A-/B+ level, which I think is pretty good. I do wish the chapters were a bit shorter though but I guess it would be hard to condense all the material.

Great book, included even more than I needed for my class. It was frustrating that it did not include much of the appendix information that most of the other books include such as acid/base values, oxidizing/reducing agent values, etc. the tables in the chapters are only partial and refer one to a nonexistent appendix to see the "rest of the values" that this book doesn't include. It's too bad because this was actually a wonderful book otherwise. It includes extra information and problems that the other version of the general chemistry book does not and it helped carry me to an A in my chemistry 2 course.

Content of the chapters matched up with the non-global edition. BUT, the exercises/word problems and answers were almost always different than the non-global edition. So, if you’re purchasing for class, I would spend the extra money for the non-global edition. I got lucky and had a professor that let me take pictures of her exercises and answers in the non-global edition since I’d already bought the global edition. Just an FYI!

This is a good chemistry book for anyone in an AP chemistry or college chemistry setting for those taking their first Chemistry course in a post secondary school setting. I have seen a better book for this topic but this book does serve its purpose and I would recommend using it consistently especially if this is assigned in your course. The explanations are fairly straight forward and examples are numerous throughout the book. If you follow this book there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't get an A in the course you are taking unless your teacher decides to digress to more advanced topics such as Organic Chemistry.

Been using this book for several terms now for my general chemistry sequence and it was a little cheaper than buying it at the campus bookstore. Very satisfied with the purchase. Tro does a great job walking through the problem solving and using real world examples, but I've found that problems can ask you to find a given variable in an equation and the book may never give an example like that. So the book is good but you won't see every kind of problem i.e. it might be up to you to rearrange the equation. This is not a fault of the book just expect to have to do some critical thinking as they don't spoon feed you everything.

Complex concepts, such as rate laws and the more difficult concepts of acids and bases among others, were broken down well and explained with helpful detail. It is the type of book that you can sit and read for a longer period of time because, although it seems like it is based on size, it isn't a verbose book and relates chemistry topics to the real world. The chapter review exercises are also very well organized, getting a bit more and more difficult as you progress rather than mix a very simple problem with a very difficult one right after.Toward the end of the chapter, they also provide a unique section called the "Key Learning Objectives" where they guide you toward specific chapter review exercises that relate to in-chapter example problems. Speaking of those in-chapter example problems, I thought it was nice how they guide you through a problem and then leave a "For Practice" one that has no guidance and challenges you to mimic the path they gave for the previous example problem.My college used this book for an entire year for a general chemistry sequence, so I experienced this entire book and was satisfied with it overall.

Just got this workbook for my son who is in 1st grade and we have worked through the roughly ten percent of the workbook. My son loves working through this and in the process learn new words. The book itself has a lot of new words that were not familiar since this is a sight words book for Grades K-3 but that was great since that prepares him for the next grades. The hardest thing is getting my child to actually sit down and do extra preparation with books but when it comes to this book, he doesn't make a fuss since it's very child-friendly. Super pleased.

The book is fantastic. It is great quality and very educational, however not boring at all. There are activities that are tied to sight words and they make studying it fun and educational at the same time. I recommend !!!

Malala Yousafzai, the educational campaigner from Swat Valley, Pakistan, came to public attention by writing for BBC Urdu about life under the Taliban. First of all, ten stars for Malala! Ten stars for her health, her stamina, her courage, and her brilliance!But truth be known this was a difficult book to read. I think it needed better editing. I kept getting lost in the timeline. For example, the way I read it, Malala was fourteen when she was shot. I knew that wasn't the case. Also, the first part of the book was so choppy that I almost gave up reading the book. I only continued because I wanted to learn about this fascinating teen.History has never been my favorite subject. It wasn't until a brilliant teacher in college did I begin paying attention. Let's face it, history is about men and their wars. Women are rarely the stars. So when a book about a female who is making history, gets bogged down in the wars, I started losing interest. When the war affects Malala and her family, then I felt involved again. Then I was glad for the bit of a history lesson that was set up in the book. Wish there had been a smoother way to move from personal story to the region's history.I hope, hope, hope that Malala writes more books. I hope she finds friends. I hope her mother can get on with her own education and can stand and give a few speeches of her own. I hope the family becomes more feminist so that mother can have her own life. I wish the family all the goodness life can give.

My 11-year old son read this and was so touched and inspired by Malala's story. He normally only likes to read sci-fi, so I was shocked when he came back to me after reading the book with tears in his eyes, saying how grateful and inspired this book was for him. Nothing has ever moved him the way this story did. I highly recommend this story to any Tweens and teens. It is sure to inspire empathy and understanding.

I checked the audiobook out from the library, forgetting that I had bought the ebook when it was on sale... because I'm that sort of person. As amused and annoyed as I was with myself when I realized this, I actually ended up getting a better experience with the book this way. Malala speaks at the beginning and end of the book, and there's her UN speech as well. So, the audio version is definitely worth listening to.It's pretty emotional, hearing about how so many children in Pakistan are unable to be educated because their poor and/or female. I think it was very important of her to point out that the biggest issue with the ignorance there is because of this lack of education. These people are studying their holy text, but aren't understanding the words. That's something to be said of all religions. It's scary what happens when the uneducated come into power and twist a holy book to their desires. And knowing she stood up for her education despite the threats, she is amazing. Truly.I introduced my 5 year old son to the story of Malala last year, we own a couple picture books about her. I wanted him to know how important it is for all people to be given the opportunity to be educated. Also, I want to raise him to understand that there is no type of person better than another - people of all races, religions, genders, etc. all deserve the same opportunities.To me, the worst part of this was knowing there was a period of time when her father regretted letting her choose an education over her safety. I cannot even imagine the grief her parents went through.I've been reading a lot of non fiction lately, and I've noticed there is a lot of rambling in them. This book didn't have that. It is a fascinating story and I am so glad she lived through being shot. I wish I could afford to go to her talk in Houston, I expect it is going to be great.

This book is an autobiography of Malala Yousafzai. She wrote about her experience in Pakistan and the effect that the Taliban had on her, her family, and the society. She’s very courageous as a national leader. As a young woman in a country where individual groups and traditional civilians want her silence, Malala didn’t hold anything back when talking about her story. She is authentic and bold. The book also had her parents perspective on the situation in which they went through. Her parents had a significant impact on her and her leadership as of today.I thought that the book was thorough. The story was in chronological order; it made it easier for the readers to follow. She also gave a short but essential background of the society and of her parents which all had affected her and the person she became today. If the reader didn’t know about the culture or her parent's history, they wouldn’t understand why people are inspired by her or what the current situation in Pakistan had on her. She didn’t mention much about her two brothers. Knowing about them would allow us to see their perspective on her as a sister as she is straying from the norm.An important theme that I found compelling is persistence. Malala didn’t give up her passion for education and even risked her life to be educated. Malala values education and school not only for herself but all the girls and boys. When the Taliban bombed schools and forced girls to stay home instead of going to schools, Malala tried everything in her power (interviews, diary, documentary) to be able to attend classes again. Even when shot in the head, she didn’t give in. She turned a local issue into a worldwide discussion.Another theme is gender roles in Pakistan. Women aren't treated equally as men, but instead, the society represses women. Malala grew up with parents that are more liberal which allow her to have more freedom. That is not typically in Pakistan. Malala came to the leader not just for the people in Pakistan, but for all (girls/children) around the world. Because she is a young woman and fight for her rights to be educated, she is slowly changing the society and their view on gender roles.I truly enjoyed the book. Knowing Malala's story made me admire her even though I’ve never met her. I’m also motivated and is inspired to better my education and keep on pushing myself even when it is difficult. She is a role model for everyone. Women, girls, and boys will enjoy reading this book. They could benefit from reading this book by being more motivated, courageous, and to speak up for what is right. Also, anyone who wants to know more about life in Pakistan and Malala’s experience in that society should read it. The book thoroughly talked about her experience in Pakistan and her work.

An insightful, introspective read.

A good collection of Thurman's works, great introduction to his deep understanding of social and cultural issues from an African American's perspective. Theology at it's best!!! Firstly, this wasn't what I expected.For some silly reason I thought I was purchasing a complete collection of Howard Thurman's writings. The fault lies with me, as I should have read the product description.What this collection represents is a set of extracts from Thurman's various books, which have then been arranged and sorted into this compilation’s three chapters, demonstrating Thurman’s perceptions on the ‘Religious Experience’, ‘The Hunger for Community’ and ‘The Authentic Self’ (to use the book’s own headings.)There's a positive and negative side because of this arrangement.I'll start with the negative. This arrangement can make the reading feel awkward and clumsy. The specific passages, although thematically connected, don’t always flow well from one to the other if what you desire to do is read continuously. In retrospect, using this book as a devotional of short readings may be a better way to approach this.On the positive side. This is an excellent collection of Thurman’s ideas. His prose is beautiful and stimulating, clearly displaying his heart and mind as a civil rights activist, minister and philosopher. It’s easy to see how Thurman’s work influenced the cause and trajectory of other civil rights activists such as the Martin Luther King Jr. His desire for equality, dignity and harmony amongst humanity finds itself fervoured by love; not a complacency with the segregation, but also not with a hate for those who endorse or proliferate that structure. Thurman’s heart was for the reconciliation of all people to each other;‘Let us now go forth to save the land of our birth from the plague that first drove us into the “will to quarantine” and to separate ourselves behind self-imposed walls. In the appended note, Anholt tells readers about Monet's life and explains that the little girl is based on Julie Manet, daughter of Monet's friend artist Berthe Morisot. I love this series of books and you can't go wrong with any of them. They are beautifully written and illustrated, and the stories are based on the real lives of famous artists and the young people in their lives who inspired them, which kids really like. The books also encourage young readers to be creative and explore possibilities in art, and the stories end with a project the child can do at home, based on the artistic style discussed in the book. Each book could really be an art lesson in itself, with art history, an interesting story, artistic techniques and a specific exercise included in each one. My daughter is in first grade but I imagine she will get more out of these books in the years to come.

This is such a cute and sweet story! I bought it as part of our artist study for my daughter's first grade curriculum. We've read it several times, and although it doesn't go in depth to Monet's biography as part of the story, it gives a very general overview of his love of gardening, and his work as an artist. There is a one page biography at the back, which I paraphrased for my children. I hope to get more of these books in the future!

I can't say enough good about this series. It is a creative way to introduce kids to these artists. They are written to be kids stories and entertain while throwing in some information about who the artist is, to show the artists' general style and introduce some specific works by the artist. My daughter is 5. She soaks this stuff in. I think she would have been able to be as receptive to the stories at age 4 and maybe just earlier than that but it would have been pushing the envelope. I suspect she will enjoy the stories for another couple years.It has lead us to google some of the actual artists' works. My daughter now wants to find some museums that have some of the pieces that are addressed in the books.

I would give this 10 stars if I could. You would be doing yourself and your children a favor by purchasing this! I learned more than what I thought I knew, and my 8 year old ate it up. I love that this book can connect with adults and children alike. A must buy for anyone wanting to expand their children's knowledge of an incredible painter!

I gave this as a gift to a 9 year old girl who loves art. We had a great time reading the book together. She especially loved the colors in the book as did I. The colorful fold-out of Monet's water garden is very nice.

This is a great story, also includes a fantastic bio in the back. Beautifully colored pictures, this really opens up your children to learning more about the greatest impressionists.

My 5 year old loves these books. The pictures are beautiful, the stories engaging. We started with one and liked it so much that I bought the rest. Educational, but they don't know it ;-)
