Andrew Garn is a native New Yorker who grew up oblivious to pigeons, despite being surrounded by them. After visiting a pigeon coop and a subsequent awakening in 2008, he has been photographing, rehabilitating and observing Columba Livia on a daily basis. He has exhibited photographs, video installations and sculptures of pigeons at A.M. Richard Fine Art in Brooklyn, NY and OK Harris. Documenting the entire spectrum of development, including full-grown pigeons, newborns, babies and “squeakers,” Garn has grown to love these birds.Mr. Garn is a fine art and editorial photographer whose work has been widely exhibited and  appeared in the pages of numerous magazines including the New York Times Magazine, Fortune, Forbes, Interview, Vogue, Vibe, Time, Newsweek, Der Spiegel, French Photo, Elle Décor, New York and Bloomberg LP. He is also the recipient of grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Graham Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the J.M. Kaplan Fund. He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship in 2013 for his work documenting Stalin-era industrial plants in Siberia. As a lifelong San Franciscan, I have been around Pigeons my entire life. I’ve often wondered, why they always got such a bad rap, as they didn’t ask to come into the world in this form. I’d often seem them limping on the streets of the city, sometimes without a foot or with a broken wing from barbed wire or other pigeon traps. In my opinion, all they were trying to do is survive, like the rest of us. I know peoplethink they are dirty, but I think they are lovely and beautiful. Andrew Garn’s incredible book is an homage to these creatures; it is so beautifully photographed, it will take your breath away! There is a brief history, an anatomy study which I found fascinating and then the story of each of the birds he had photographed.There isn’t a story that I didn’t love. Pigeons are important. I never realized that until I started feeding them. And then I found a baby who I knew would not survive and brought him home. During that time, I read everything I could find about them....They are fantastic animals. Andrew's book will show you and tell you why. The photos are technically stunning, and show the exquisite beauty of these birds - that most people overlook. Why? Because they are so common? Well so are humans............The text is educational and enlightening and sometimes very sad. People and our man-made toxins are not always very kind to pigeons. There is a chapter about the incredibly dedicated people who fix them up and send them on their way, if possible; and about others who take them into their homes. I've been showing this book to everyone that I know, and most, if not all are quite surprised. They actually look at every single page. No flipping. Andrew has given us all a gift - he's shown us the beauty and the extraordinary, that exists right under our very noses. I don't know anyone who has seen the book who will walk past a pigeon without pausing for a moment in appreciation of an animal that they previously scorned or ignored.

Let's be honest. Social Security can be complicated. Forget all of the political aspects of the program, but if you've been putting money into the system, it affects you. The problem is that once you're eligible to start receiving benefits, it isn't as simple as filling out a form and collecting checks. There are so many different rules, income limitations, age requirements, cut-offs, that it can drive a person mad.So, should you start collecting as soon as you're eligible, or should you wait a few years until you can receive your full benefit? How much money can you make in retirement before it starts affecting your Social Security? Are your benefits taxed? What if you have a spouse, how will their benefits impact you? What happens if I already have a pension? And have you heard people talk about WEP? These are all common concerns that will affect all of us, and if you just tried to get the information from the Social Security website itself, you'd end up more confused than when you started.That's why I think this book should be in the hands of anyone who is serious about their finances. Even if retirement is still years away, you will still be facing many of these decisions even if the specific numbers change over time. The author does a great job of breaking down this complicated program into its important components so you can find out what's important to you and get the information you need. There's no silver bullet or magic number when it comes to Social Security, so this book will guide you and inform you so that you can make the best decision for you instead of relying on some generic advice you find online or hear on TV.It's short, it's an easy read, and it's to the point without making things any more complicated than it needs to be.

I learned about this book from a cnbc article that had a link to an "opensocialsecurity.com" calculator, which presents a recommended age for you to elect your benefit, based on age, marital status, and "Primary Insurance Amount," i.e. the benefit you're scheduled to be awarded at FRA. For me, it suggested age 67 and 9 months for a specified total "payout." I bought the book because I hoped to gain a better understanding of why this age was recommended for me (algorithms, actuarial considerations etc.). There aren't any clues. All I found was the same "Wait till Age 70 if you can" vs. "Take it at 62 only if x,y,z applies" discussion you'll find just about anywhere. So, I'm still scratching my head to know why age 67 and 9 mos. is better for me than age 70 (which has an attached total "payout" of less than $5000 over that which I'd receive taking benefits at my FRA.) I guess the calculator figures you're lucky if you reach 85, or some undetermined age. To his credit, Mr. Piper encourages feedback and provides contact information in the book. I will mail him, and adjust my rating if I get the information I was hoping for....[Update : Mr. Piper did respond, and in timely fashion, and addressed my questions to my satisfaction.]Otherwise, It's a decent, concise book I suppose (though I think it's perhaps a bit pricey for a paperback a little over 100 pp.). Maybe the price went up along with 2% COLA increase last year. :)

Great book! In some cases social security can be complicated. But if your situation is not complicated this book will probably answer your questions and provide you with sufficient knowledge to make an optimal decision. If your case happens to be a complicated one for whatever reason - multiple marriages, disability questions, non-covered pensions, etc., this book MIGHT provide you with enough info to figure it out and make a decision on your own. But even if your situation is too complex for that - at a minimum - the book will provide you with a heads up on the issues and a good sense of the options that your should consider; this background will be helpful in discussions with your advisor or the SSA staff.

This book is "okay" if you've never researched Social Security at all. Points are succinct. They get to the point quickly. Many pages may not apply to your specific situation -- not the author's fault (he's trying to be all things to all people). Just know this info repeats what your other studies may have already told you. In concert with it is the online calculator that tries to determine your exact best time to start collecting Social Security -- and I have not found another -- online, nor anywhere else. Let's hope it's accurate.I found this very easy to tolerate, as opposed to the grueling rendition of the audible versions of the "Get What's Your's..." series on Medicare and Social Security. My God, the melodrama in those presentations are ANNOYING!! :-)

This very good book covers most of the topics that the typical person (or family) needs to consider while making the major decision of when to claim Social Security retirement benefits.The book is organized into bite-sized pieces that lets you easily focus on your specific situation (Single, working spouse, spouses with unequal earnings histories, non-working spouse, etc.). It explains the rational behind the decision making for the 'when to file' decisions.This book has helped me tweak my strategy for when to claim and has made me much more confident about my decision. Well worth the price!

As a retired professional programmer, I cannot recommend this book to beginners, or to programmers who want to learn Prolog. The casual style fails to cover the language, it's weak on examples and weak conceptually.

Poorly written and formatted. It mars the beautiful Prolog language. I learned to not trust Amazon rating because it's heavily affected by "reviewers" who got the ebook for free.

Inconsistent and hard to read.

Good book, overall. The real key to me is that this is a very small language. I kept looking for more than there really was. This book is a good deal for the Kindle, but the paper copy is a lot more than I think that the information is worth.

Ordered this book to help me understand Prolog. Its gives a basic overview of the topic, however the formatting I think messes up is kind of confusing (kindle version). In my opinion, the examples were kind of odd. But I guess that's what you get from a book that should take you a day to get through.

A lot of code in this book(read in kindle) cannot be displayed correctly.

Chapter 8 and 9 seem to be copied from another book, and the rest of the book is a summary of a self study session. It is a decent summary though, hence the extra two stars.

I feel like a prodigy in the Java programming world. This book has helped me quickly advance from novice to expert over the past week. It is good how intuitively the learning flow of this book is layed out. It progresses just as it should and helped me learn quickly. When it says success in a day it isn't lying.

A good guide book on requirements for agile product management business analysis with Scrum. I was at first unaware what Scrum is but after reading the book, I now have a much better understanding of it and also how I can better leverage on it. I find the INVEST principle to be a valauble concept learnt as well. This book has helped me to widen my knowledge on this once very technical topic which I thought to be so.

Not a bad overview. Quick read. I don't know if English is the author's primary language, but the verbiage can be a little rough and wordy in spots. However, as in all my evals, if I learned something, that can cover a multitude of grammatical errors. I am glad I read it.

The book does a good job of explaining user stories and how scrum master can help you in product management. Definitely worth it, highly recommended.
