This book is HUGE and SOO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!

A photography book like this has a number of factors to address in a review. On all counts, Kim Taylor Reese (KTR) excels.The technique is black and white still photography. KTR's work is a seminal study in the truism that while there is no perfect color, there is perfect black & white. He captures a balance of clarity and graininess, light and dark that indicate first rate tools (cameras and film), brilliant photography, and technical excellence in the darkroom. It would be easy to say that B&W is a limiting technique, but KTR gives lie to this. His work incorporates people as the centerpiece, the main focus of the image and incredible landscapes as the backdrops, and does both well.The compostion of his photos in this book always starts with the dancer, the people in the image, usually centered and in a natural setting. The settings can be austere, like a oceanscape on a calm day, or busy, like the point where a beach meets a tropical forest with areas of calm and chaos intermingled. Simple, but powerful, keeping the attention of the viewer centered on the dancer while acknowledging the natural beauty of Hawai'i.The hula dancers, male and female, are the subjects. All of the models are clearly masters and mistresses of their discipline and have been practicing for many years. The power of the women and the grace of the men cannot be overstated. I'm not particularly inspired by men, but ladies of my acquaintance assure me that the male dancers are very inspiring. The lady dancers are stunningly beautiful although not in the fashion magazine, malnurished, substance abuser style that dominates European and American media. They are muscular, graceful, feminine, poised, and convey a sense of personal power and balance that is without equal. If there is anything to be criticized it is that the poses are somewhat static and don't do the hula dance justice in it's movement.Kim Taylor Reese has done an incredible job of uniting technique, composition, and subject in this book. The beauty and power (if not always the movement) of hula are communicated in an inspirational manner.E.M. Van Court

Kim Taylor Reece is truly a master of the photographic form. Not just in capturing hula in it's glory, but in photography itself. Beautiful work, perfectly framed, perfectly composed photos. Dance photography is extremely rough stuff - trying to capture a time-, movement-, and space-based art into a static, two-dimensional medium is almost folly, but Kim has an amazing ability to capture the movement and depth of the movement in a way that few photographers can - you'll truly feel that the subjects are, in fact, moving, and that's what dance is all about. I loved going to his gallery on Oahu when I lived there, to poke around at the rather expensive (but worth it) photographs, to speak with Rocky (the beautiful and extremely welcoming woman in so many of these photos), and Kim (who is also extremely nice and more than willing to talk about his artwork). For those who cannot afford a couple hundred dollars per photograph, this book is your best option. It's solidly put together, nice thick serious paper, excellent reproduction of the photos, and it is a wonderful collection of Kim's different styles. The book is beautiful, and the photographs are beautiful. Of course, to truly experience Kim's photos, you must visit his gallery, or at least find a way to see the images in full-size: 8"x10" and greater, but this book does justice to the photography.

Kitschmeister extraordinaire! That cover photograph is weak. That should give you a sense of what the rest are like.KTR has a bit of an eye for light but his compositions are blah. Besides, I've heard that he uses models and not dancers. So, the poses are faux.Tacky!

I bought this book as an undergrad thinking about grad school. I wanted to learn more about what career opportunities would come from a PhD in sciences and I wanted to know what I would be getting myself into if I chose that path. This book is packed with great advice for what happens after you're finished with the highest form of formal education there is. Feibelman explains from his own experience (as a physicist), and others' experiences, routes in academia, gov, and industry. He also explains skills that formal education wouldn't necessarily teach you: getting funded, interviews, giving talks, etc.This book showed me a side of academics and the scientific community I hadn't known. And let's just say I didn't know what a postdoc was before I read this. I think the information in this book is invaluable to anyone who has, plans to, or is even considering pursuing a PhD in a science.

I would recommend this book for any PhD student in the hard sciences: Physics, Engineering, Math, Chemistry, etc. It gave me some real insight into what the world of research (industrial or academic) will be like when I graduate with my PhD. If you're just beginning a PhD program, or are considering Masters vs. PhD, this should be must-read material. I'm surprised my universities have not offered a class that covers this type of material, it would be much more useful than the mandatory ethics classes they force you to take.This book seems written for people who have already finished their PhD or are about to graduate very soon. I wish it had more about getting THROUGH the PhD in the first place, but that's too much to ask. This book focuses more on what to expect AFTER your PhD program, although some of the advice on picking an advisor, mentor, and research topic are applicable to anybody. So is the chapter on writing and presentations.

I am currently a graduate student. In a couple years I will be applying to PhD programs. This book had some great suggestions. I definitely feel slightly more confident pursuing a career in research. The book specifically addressed some things that I had some concerns about, specifically establishing yourself as a researcher in a competitive market. The job market will not be very competitive in my area of research, but funding is extremely competitive and big NIH research grants are extremely rare. I now have a better sense of direction.

I am currently pursuing my PhD and devoured this book. A PhD Is Not Enough is full of practical, useable advice and information. This book takes the reader through finding an advisor, giving presentations and seminars, teaching loads, postdoc job considerations, publishing papers, everything. The author's background in physics is close enough to my own field that every insight into graduate school and the subsequent career path translates into my own experience nicely. Dr. Feibelman gives a great rundown of the motivations of professors you may choose to work with during the various stages of their own careers and how that will affect their students for better or worse. Topics such as what sorts of projects to take on during your postdoc position, pros and cons of university labs verses government labs, obtaining funding, setting up your own lab or research area, and what interviewers are looking for prove very helpful insights into academia and will allow the student better preparation for each stage. It's a quick read, insightful, with an honest look at the sometimes contradictory forces of the academic environment. I highly recommend this book for anyone pursuing PhD and pursuing a scientific career.

This book is extraordinarily valuable for anyone with a doctoral degree in the natural or social sciences (Although the author is a physicist, I found his advice transferred very easily to my experiences in the social sciences, and is far better than similar books by social scientists. I only wish this book had been available when I was a grad student). The author is concise; he says what needs to be said and leaves out the fluff. I strongly disagree with those reviewers who said his advice was common sense. If that were true, then why do so many intelligent students fail to follow these guidelines and end up dropping out, struggle in dysfunctional environments, or in some way fail to reach their potential? I found his advice to be rich and rewarding, and what he said frequently described the people I saw every day when I was a grad student. The fact that he refers to "overhead foils" is trivial and does not mean the book is outdated; the advice is not outdated by any means.Not everyone sees things the same way or has the same experiences, and I am sure there are other viewpoints, and one should always seek out a variety of opinions, but the author has a viewpoint that one should not miss. A short book, but one that is worth its weight in gold.

I read this to see whether to recommend it to graduate and undergraduate students in the sciences that attend my university. The author is a well-credentialed scientist at Sandia National Laboratory.There are many opinions presented that people considering or attempting a career in scientific research should know. Interviews, preparing talks, choosing what to publish and how, research plans, weighing various career options - all these topics are addressed.Some opinions differ from mine, most notably his preference for government labs like his over universities, but common sense generally prevails. The prose was vaguer than I prefer, much of it seemed obvious, perhaps because I've already been there. A few times it was obvious this dates to 1993.Overall, I prefer the book Academeology (google it) by "Female Science Professor", which nails the university life with much greater accuracy and precision. Aspiring scientists should really read both, and go into their careers with their eyes open.

This book is an excellent companion to the NFHS Softball Rules Book. It is clearly written, and an indispensable reference for umpires who work different levels of softball. It puts the different rules for NCAA, NFHS, USSSA, and USA Softball at your fingertips. The rules appear alphabetically, making them easy to find. There is an especially good four-page explanation of the DP/Flex rule. I would recommend this to coaches and players who want a clear overview of the rules, and to umpires for a quick and easy reference to the rules and their different applications for high school, college, and travel teams. I have been umpiring softball for almost 30 years, and I find this book very helpful.

If you're involved in softball at any level, as an umpire, coach, player or a parent, you need this book! Learn the rule differences between the various softball codes, NCAA, NFHS, USSSA, USA. The book is written in a clear concise manner so anyone can understand. One of the best tools for umpires who work the different softball associations, so you can refresh yourself before your games.

If you have never purchased this book, as a softball umpire you are missing the boat. This a great book to help new and experienced umpires. This is an exceptional book with perfect pictures of the projects within. I grow gourds every year to make hand painted birdhouses out of and when I saw this book (I checked it out from the library first) I thought to myself "Wow, you really need to get busy you've got alot of crafting to do with those gourds!" It is an awesome book and I am happy that I added it to my library of books. The price is good, too.Gourds are easy to grow. In fact if you don't keep an eye on them they will take over more than the space you arranged for them in your yard and there are many volunteer gourds just waiting in every seed that is inside each and every gourd. If you like a certain gourd from your crop, dry those seeds and plant them the following year and you will have a whole vine of those gourds with that years crop and the seeds seem to last forever. My husband was cleaning the seeds out of one last year and he must have dropped a few on the ground because this year we had volunteer gourd vines all over by the trash can out back. They are definitely prolific.

This is a really great book for inspiration in creating your own gourd dolls and spirit figures. Artists are creating the most incredible art works with gourds and it's wonderful to see the many ways they can be fashioned. There are a few tips for techniques, but I would have liked additional information for some of the other techniques to create these wonderful objects, such as other products used.

The book arrived in absolutely brand new condition. I am a hobbyist dollmaker and I found this book truly inspirational. Can't wait to try my hand at making gourd dolls. The pictures are a feast for the eyes. There is lots of information in the book, plus many projects. I was thrilled with this purchase.

As a gourd artist, I wasn't able to find much information on creating figural pieces with gourds when I first began. Ginger and Jim have done an incredible job of compiling work from a variety of artists with different styles.There is a great history on dolls in different cultures in the beginning of the book that I found fascinating. Different techniques for creating figures are shown in many styles as well as mediums. Probably the very best thing about this book is the abundance of pictures throughout. It will give you great inspiration to come up with your own creations!

There is a wealth of information in this book on how to construct gourd dolls of all types from all cultures. I love the fact it is a hard covered book and that it has a gallery of works and links to artists so you can check out all of their works.

This book is so WONDERFUL. I am eager to begin projects soon. Ginger has done a fabulous job in presenting all the projects to inspire creativity.

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Overall the book is very nice on first look. Good quality and bright colors. However as far as touch and feel books go I was very disappointed. Very touch item was basically the same. Nothing fuzzy, or rough, or any real variety.

I bought this as a present for my young nephew. Based on the title including "Touch and Feel" I expected this book to have much more "touch" exploration. Instead, most pages are flat print that have no special surfaces, colors or anything. There is very little for a young child to engage with. Really for $2.99 I didn't expect much, yet somehow this book managed to still fall below a very low bar.Do yourself a favor: save the few dollars and put it towards a book with richer content.

I had hoped that since it was a baby book and said it was a touch and feel book, it would have great textures for the baby to feel.This was not the case.

Cute, but not much to "feel" inside. I purchased it for children 1 1/2 years old.

This is a cute and simple book that covered a great amount of Hanukkah topics. The touch and feel part is a little lackluster; they could have done more. My daughter still really enjoyed it and wanted to look at it often.

I bought this book thinking there would be pictures that actually had to do with the biblical Jewish holiday, but I only found a bunch of drawings and pictures of cookies, Gelt and presents, which were not even very original or attractive.

Worked well as a gift for my one year old nephew

Super cute! As many people mentioned, it's not really all that touchy-feely, but who cares. Colorful, cute and there are different textures. I definitely recommend this little book.

I received the book just the other day and at first thought it was great, very easy to read, but then when I started flipping through it i realized that it's missing some pages. It skips from pg. 448 to 497 all of a sudden, and then later it skips from 512 back to 465. And pg. 449-464 are nowhere to be found. Weird.

Fantastic book!!! A must, but you need to Buy directly from the author at pancepreppearls.comThe books being sold on here are cheap fake copies of very bad quality. I had to return my copy. It even has a spelling error on THE FRONT COVER (Examinatios).It's even cheaper on the actual website

I think I received a fake copy. It says "EXAMINATIOS" instead of EXAMINATIONS and some pages are blurry.But in terms of content, the book is very helpful and concise.

I am currently in my didactic year in PA school. This book is my main study material other than the power points given in class. I suggested this book to everyone in my class, and now a majority of us have it. The reason I gave 4 stars is that it is only in black and white and there is a lot of information put onto a page. Other than that, this is a great accessory for PA school.

I have used both the first edition and second edition PPP throughout my PA school journey and have never been disappointed. The information is presented in an easy flow format with all key information and high yield facts about each disease state. I am SO happy that this edition included an index as it definitely makes it easier to find specific topics. I feel as though this version has more images as well which I have found very useful in my studies. Overall, excellent lay out and content - definitely a must have for surviving PA school and passing the PANCE.

Was intimidated by this book at first bc it has ALOT of information and did not read it at first. Once I started on this it became my best friend studying for 1st panre, and I wish I had started with it. I passed my first panre thanks to this and cme resources course but this helped me feel comfortable during that review course
