#29,367 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I like this book. It does not attempt to address more than the title suggests: a thinking process for move selection. There are no explicit tactics puzzles, or opening traps, or deep positional explanations, etc. etc. But, it does well for the serious club player who wants to improve how they evaluate to select good moves and avoid blunders. I have studied lots of tactics puzzle which improved my tactical strength quite a bit, but find my thought process in games is riddled with oversights. This books closely examines every move of two games, starting from early middle game positions and shows every consideration in the authors 8 step method for evaluating a position. His method is not revolutionary, it contains most of the same elements as others you can easily find. But this author applies it explicitly, with every consideration in the book. He considers everything and how it is evaluated. If you are already a strong tournament or online player with a proven process, this book probably is too basic for you. But for the vast majority of is mortals (as the author calls himself) this book is efficient in its presentation of how to improve and has practical suggestions about how to get the most from tactics puzzles too.I would recommend the Kindle version. Had I purchased the hard-copy, I might feel shortchanged since the book is very short (doesn't even need a table of contents). But the Kindle edition is laid out nicely and is a very good bargain for players motivated to improve.

This seems to be a big part of some of the ideas that I've been missing. I got through this book in a little over an hour, and that was probably less time given to it than I should have. This is not tactical or variation calculating kind of book. While that sort of thinking is certainly necessary, this book is not here to address that issue. This book is a set of in observation, and paying attention to every single move and how to do that in a way where I can go back through the process and say, "oh! I didn't look for that!" Or say with confidence that I've evaluated a position to the best of my ability. The author presents a systematic way of looking at a position, and it has definitely helped me evaluate a given position during my games. If you're like me (not very good with an online Blitz rating of 1150-1200) this book is probably good for you, too. One of my biggest problems is what to do in some otherwise quiet positions. This book helps with that. For the price? 5/5. I think it is prices perfectly for the time spent with the book, and as far as benefits in my play per dollar spent it is very much worth your time and money if you are like me and sometimes look at positions and say... "I just don't see anything here". Its a different kind of chess book and I really appreciate that. A diagram with every move to illustrate the evaluations and the thinking process is really great.

The book mostly walks through moves from 3 games and describes what the author is thinking as the moves are considered. The meat of the strategy is a short description at the beginning. The rest is just describing moves.

Todo me agradó. Lo utilizo para mejorar mi ajedrez.

I don’t want my money back, but my time sorry James. Probably this book is for USCF 900 ratings or lower. I’m 1398 at the moment and most if not all the paragraph are common sense.

Received it with no problem, got it sooner than expected.

I am currently rated 1950 but always curious about these “rapid” improvement methods, as chess learning is a slow process. As some other reviewer said, the concepts are basic and covered ad nauseam everywhere else. However, they are presented in a very systematic and clear manner, making the text totally worth it. Following the steps described will necessarily improve your game, mainly because it will make you a more systematic and reflective chess player. I will surely recommend it.

It legit improved my. Hess game at a low cost. But it honestly could be reduced down to a listicle.

#194,832 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

So now we have a book about the books about Pope Francis. More precisely, it's a book about proper Catholic discourse when discussingthis Pope or any other. For most of my lifetime, criticism of Rome came mostly from liberals and progressives, although there wasa small minority on the traditionalist right as well. Since John Paul II was a charismatic leader himself, the criticism was sometimesdirected at the curia or "Rome" in general rather than him personally, but he was obviously the man responsible. Cardinal Ratzingerwas also criticized, but as Benedict XVI he took up his new role in a different way. Still, most criticism of the Pope came from theleft. Progressives often gathered around a bishop or pastor where they felt comfortable and continued to direct anger over at "Rome".Under Francis, that has changed, and the majority of criticism has come from conservatives who are not generally predisposed todo this. Veteran Catholic apologist Karl Keating examines this phenomenon in The Francis Feud. It is mostly a response to thethree bestsellers on Francis to appear in the past several months-The Dictator Pope by Henry Sire (written at first under the nameMarcantonio Colonna), Lost Shepherd by Phil Lawler, and To Change the Church by Ross Douthat. Keating looks at the strengthsand weaknesses of each of these books and what they contribute to the conversation.Sire is a traditionalist, and his title evokes the inflammatory tone of many rad trad blogs over the past five years and even beforethat, but much of the book is actually better written than the blogs. Lawler and especially Douthat are more measured in theircriticism but still arrive at some strong conclusions. Keating's book seems to be prompted by his disputes with fellow apologistDave Armstrong and others over the appropriate way to criticize the pope. Armstrong reacted to Lawler's book in a deeply personal wayand began an endless discussion with Keating. Armstrong's criteria for appropriate criticism tend to be so narrow that hardly any discussion is possible, but at the other extreme the rad trads take things way over the top. As examples there are discussions of Steve Skojec, Chris Ferrara, Louie Verrechio, and a brief shout out to E. Michael Jones (not a trad but way out there in his own way). I found it odd that Keating thought that crowd is almost all men, when Hilary White and Ann Barnhardt are names that come to mind. Joseph Matt of the Wanderer, which once seemed quite extreme, is actually moderate by comparison. They always were harsh on bishops and priests but avoided attacking the popes until now. This book focuses on the conservative end of the spectrum theologically and politically. So, for instance, we don't have to deal withMassimo Faggioli and Antonio Spadaro. Armstrong defends the pope for different reasons, and he does so as a conservativedefending the office of the papacy, which is understandable but a difficult stretch. I also appreciated the reference to Paul Seaton'sreview of the Douthat book.

I very much admire and respect Mr. Keating. Before reading this book, I read The Dictator Pope which (unlike Keating) I found to be very credible. Then I started reading this book. My thoughts: 1) It is relatively easy to be a critic, and to place the burden of proof on whatever/whoever you are criticizing. 2) This book seems to be written with the attitude that "I'm the only one around here without an agenda." The fact is that Mr. Keating has the same agenda as those whom he criticizes: to sell books.

Imagine walking a tightrope whose two anchoring points are not firm and settled but bobbing up and down in-and-out, and side to side. This is the challenge Karl Keating has taken on in the writing of this highly valuable book. Many Catholics are perplexed, dismayed, interiorly divided, and grieved to the bottom of their souls over the pontificate of Pope Francis. We love Holy Mother the Church as we love our own motherland, as we love our mothers and spouses and kids. We were Pope Francis' BFFs and biggest boosters, loyal deck-hands on the Barque of Peter which we thought (and think) to be like the Ark of Noah, a place to stay alive and afloat in the storms of the world. Then the Barque hit a Rock and the Rock split the Flock, and attentive Catholics began to recall that Francis' effective papal motto is not " Tu es Petrus" (You are Rock) but "Hagan Lio" (Make a Mess).OK, that establishes the ambience.Three authors --- Henry Sire, Philip Lawler, and Ross Douthat --- take on the Francis Phenomenon, trying to parse his personality, his politics and his paradoxical Faith --- and the triocular vision provides both depth-perception and vertigo. Where's the Church going? What the hell does Francis think he's doing? And yikes! --- am I in a handbasket?Keating takes us through these three authors with an eye towards fair analysis, calm charity and a balanced perspective. His lifetime-honed skills as lawyer and apologist are fully engaged in an effort to make the conflicts clear and the conclusions unfevered, charitable and true. From the tightrope he walks, he could fall on the one side from too much clemency, on the other side from too much ire. He could lose us by being over-subtle, or go lopsided with just a few sharp tendentious word choices. He does a great job of presenting the Francis Feud fairly. He does not impose conclusions but shows how to reach them fairly. I thank him for helping me have a firmer foundation despite the fracas now shaking the Faith.

I enjoyed the book. It’s a fast-paced read covering a subject quite belabored in searching for truth by the Catholic and secular media. I feel Keating has done a fair job of presenting positions of the several authors that I have mostly suspected all along. The extra benefit the book provides is reasoning of positions over rationalizing them. I recommend this book if the intention is to gain a broader perspective of thoughts across the continuum of how to best be Catholic. As a side note, the text has some typos. But, who am I to judge…

With an exacting eye "The Francis Feud" by Karl Keating examines not only three books dealing with Pope Francis and the controversies that have arisen in his papacy but also the disputes among fellow Catholics on social media. There is indeed a feud. Somewhere between two extreme views there is a reasoned and objective one that Karl presents that puts the subject and how to deal with or express it in proper perspective.

It’s very good. I read the three books he discusses, and, as I said, his analysis is good. He does not really analyze whether the Holy Father is a good or bad pope. It’s about the controversy, not about the pope. So, it’s a good book that doesn’t directly address the main issue.
