I can understand why some people might not love this book. It gets a bit meandering at times, and the timeline is somewhat nonlinear, which can make it difficult to follow the story at times. It also helps to have read Complexity by Mitchell Waldrop as a precursor. Beyond that, another difficulty arises with the way the detailed description of sometimes seemingly superficial matters such as the way people are dressed, as one other reviewer noted and I somewhat agree with. in other words, there are times in reading this book that one can get distracted. To add to this, it is not clear that any sane non-mathematical reader would want to read this book and expect to learn how to beat or predict the markets. On the other hand, it also doesn't seem that someone who is deeply scientific would want to read this book either, with its absence of equations and precise definitional technicality for explaining some of the more interesting foundational ideas such as fractals and neural networks. Instead, Bass is merely dropping clues as to how the world of finance actually works. Read between the lines, and one take is the Predictors dropoff point to either be cynical of all financial markets. But I think in a way his real point is that the business of prediction is messy and historically intertwined with everything from the history of the modern computing age and to the evolution of ever more abstract financial techniques that have lead us to bitcoin. That the Predictors would eventually make money ends up being besides the point.

Enjoyable account of scientists applying their knowledge to trading. The book is a little shallow, in terms of depth, since it neither describes the models or strategies in any detail nor gives much in the way of trading anecdotes. The best part of the book is the challenges the founders face as entrepreneurs-- raising capital and structuring a new business (compensation, responsibilities, juggling sales and modeling). Overall, an interesting read if you are in the industry, but probably a little slow for those who love Michael Lewis' work.

I loved it enough to re-read, something rare for me. I plan to read it a couple more times. I even made a pilgrimage to the Santa Fe institute to see where these guys hang out.It is set in a world of math, finance, brainiacs, and the great Southwest--all fun things!It's a much better book than Bass' other book about these guys, "Eudamonic Pie." The big caveat is that I read Waldrip's "Complexity" first. I can't imagine the book being nearly as much fun without that background.

Before Michael Lewis and his deserved bestseller Flash Boys, before the LTCM implosion in 1998 there were The Predictors. Gaining an understanding of modern financial markets and how our stock market currently works (or fails to work...) requires an understanding of how the Wall Street morality of "gaming the system," met the computer revolution. The Predictors is one important contribution to that understanding.

This book captures several components of a worthy story. It chronicles the pursuit by brilliant, seasoned, and spirited scientists to accomplish the seemingly impossible. It tells enough of their personal stories to make the pursuit interesting. It also includes enough technical detail to give the reader an idea of the complexity of their problem, and it gives an insight into the workings of the world's mysterious investment system.I believe the book would be worthy for anyone interested in those components and I highly recommend it as a testimony to the determination, intelligence, and knowledge of some people who make their fortunes in the high tech world. My only slight disappointment was that the ending left some questions unanswered, such as what next!

The Preidictors is a good book, easy read, entertaining but including enough detail to be interesting to the experienced trader. A bit light on the math and science behind the methodology, but that may be propietary and too technical for non math types anyway.

Interesting story of group that beat the market. I like to read about smart people doing something extraordinary.

Bass writes lucidly about science and the decidedly odd interface between Wall Streeters in Armani suits and Birkenstock-wearing science guys in the desert. An enjoyable, informative and entertaining read. His earlier work about the same crew and Vegas, Eudanomic Pie, is great too.

I have had a great time reading this book. It raised questions that had never been raised to me before or at least, not articulated in the way they are.I used to think philosophy-theology conversations weren't something I could be well-versed in, but this book makes it approachable and entertaining in its humor and logic which gives me lots of hope in being able to delve more into arguments of faith and reason.

Excellent book for a variety of reasons. I highly recommend to share this title with both your theist and atheist friends. Both sides, at a minumum, will learn new insights and perspectives about this whole messy debate that I think will raise the standard for everyone.With much more clarity and substance, Fr. Andrew Younan directly challenges and faces the New Atheism movement in a way that has never been done before. He addresses all the major New Atheism leaders and authors directly, honestly, and fairly. While other authors do this on some level, there is not one other title that addresses New Atheism as extensive as this book. This is evidenced by the sheer number of them he quotes and references (~20). He illustrates his expertise on the question of God and philosophy by his clear thinking on the subject, but also shows an immense amount of knowledge on the opposing posisitons and how these atheists get to their conclusions.Additionally, this is the only book today that specifically addresses atheist authors Krauss and Dennett. No one else has dealt with them before, at least as in-depth. Both Krauss and Dennett are growing in popularity pretty fast so this book couldn't come any sooner.Fr. Andrew's approach is fair to the question of God by not automatically concluding for the reader, but rather letting the reader see evidence/reasoning on both sides in order to reach a conclusion organically.It's very refreshing to see someone finally address the very weak (and sometimes embarrassing) theist arguments. In a charitable yet humerous way, he reveals his frustration with the false dichatomy between "Science or God" and how a good majority of theists in America are not helping their case.All the while, his writing style is extremely enjoyable and humerous while maintaining a sense of respect on both sides. I highly recommend this book.

If you're looking for a shortcut way to argue with atheists or anti-theists, this is not your book. If you're looking for a clever "clap-back" that can fit in 140 characters, this is not your book. If you're an atheist or anti-theist looking for ridiculous claims to mock, this is not your book. If you're looking for a book that takes very difficult concepts and makes them easier to understand (but doesn't water them down with bad analogies or different meanings altogether), then this is your book, and whether or not you're a theist or atheist shouldn't matter in that case.This is easily the best response to the New Atheism movement I have seen. It is thorough, clear, fair, and, unlike so much of what we see in society's "dialogue," sane. It calls out bad thought both in the New Atheist movement, but also in much of the "religious" response to that movement. It removes emotion and rhetoric, and addresses the question at hand (does God exist) as purely as possible. It demonstrates how despite being knowledgeable in matters of science, so many of the New Atheists are simply not good at philosophy, some going as far as discounting philosophy as being entirely unimportant (despite trading in it, perhaps unwittingly).The arguments presented in the book are excellent, however they may not be the best part of the book. I would argue the best feature of the book is presenting good techniques for thinking, and attempting to arrive at truth which should be the purpose of any and all thought.I recommend this book to anyone interested in answering the question of God's existence, regardless or religion (or irreligion for that matter).

This book should be a must read not only for any student in philosophy 101, but really anyone that wants to have a book that turns on their brain. It uses the power of reason to discredit the new atheists such as Dawkins (I have read and enjoyed many of Dawkins' books, including the God Delusion) . You will not find rebuttals with a poor understanding of science here or quotes to the Bible. It is all pure solid reasoning. Fr. Younan writing is very clear and reachable even though, be warned, you will need to stop many times to re-read and engage your nogging. I had read Mr. Dawkins take down of first proof of Aquinas first, so I was floored when I re-read it here to find how badly I had understood it, not to mention Mr. Dawkins.No matter where you are in your belief of God (yes, no, or undecided), this is a must read. It has changed some opinions I had. Even if it does not do that for you, your brain will come out stronger with the exercise.Edit: I want to correct myself about Bible quotes. There is a quote of Genesis in the chapter dedicated to Evolution. Fr Younan is, of course, a catholic priest at will defend evolution and clarify how Genesis should be interpreted. Once again Thomas Aquinas is brought in with a prescient quote that God created Matter with the power to develop life (I am overly simplifying here). Aquinas intuition was bowing down to Darwin across the gulf of hundreds of years. I had goosebumps reading Aquinas' quote, for which you need Fr. Younan interpreting the very old way of writing. My respect for Aquinas has grown greatly. The man had a great mind. And thanks to Fr. Younan for bringing these topics with great clarity.Get the book it is a delicious mind treat.

Having walked the Camino, I couldn't help but wonder how they would get through some of the paths with a wheelchair but the Camino did it's magic and provided. I was also impressed with the spiritual journey. Part of the lessons of the Camino involves letting go and trusting, surrendering to the way. Patrick does a great job of epitomizing this lesson that his friend, Justin, has already learned. I'm still learning to grow in trust each time I hike the Camino. Strongly recommended to those who have and have not walked The Way of Saint James.

Patrick & Justin.......WOW what a truly loving unconditionally friendship you have. I've walk the Camino & I couldn't watch your trailer without crying(which I have watched many many times now) so I was counting down the days for your book release. What a phenomenal story you two have, beautifully written guys well done. I only walked the Camino a year ago so I felt like I was right there with you both on that trail. To read the thoughts of Justin and Patrick during their Camino Journey is a gift. I was so intrigued! Having been at Point Loma the same years as Justin and knowing who he is plus having done a portion of the Camino myself, made this story so real. The vulnerability of them both gives courage to readers who want to go deeper still. I appreciate the new view of a Sabbath. I had the wonderful privilege of hearing these men speak at our church. I couldn't wait to read the book and learn more about their adventure. For me this book was a great read, but so much more.I found it emotional from the very beginning. It's such a good story of love between two friends that has lasted a life time. The commitment that few are willing to make along with the trip and challenge of a life time. This is a must read. I can't wait for the Documentary to come out November 2nd.

What an amazing book! I couldn't put it down and read it all in one long enjoyable sitting. It was so inspiring, heartfelt, honest, insightful, amazing and beautiful. Having done the Camino myself makes me appreciate it even more, although everybody can appreciate the power of their friendship. It was so touching and they both really put themselves out there in their rawest and most vulnerable ways. You can't help but laugh, cry and embrace their story. A fantastically enjoyable and emotional read.

A truly enjoyable, inspiring book that kept me reading long into the night. To see two friends, Justin and Patrick, stay committed to each other through the years is so refreshing. I cried more than once as these guys showed such love and gentleness with each other, their wives, and kids at each stage of their lives. The journey across the Camino was mind boggling, but they were committed to the last mile to make it happen. Then when they needed help, total strangers saw the need and came to their aid. This has moved me to reach out in my own life to help others. I give this book 5 stars and look so forward to the movie!!
